Los Caribes Apartments
Reviewed 9 December 2013

Los Caribes is in a great location overlooking the promenade and views of the sea.
It is less than 5 mins walk from the Kasbah, but is far enough away to be quiet and definitely not disturbed by the noise of the bars/cafes/clubs etc. The Yumbo is somewhat further 15 mins walk or so, or a few mins by taxi.

All the rooms have views of the garden, pool and over the promenade and out to sea. both on ground floor and first floor level.

The pool area is spacious, with sunbeds, but they could do with a few more for when its busy they can all be taken up unless you are early (as happened a couple of times when I was there)
However it is a short walk to the beach if you don't mind the steps down (5-10min walk).

The rooms are fair size, but I think could just be a bit cramped for 4 adults (2 bedrooms) unless you are really good friends. The kitchen is very well equipped 2 ring hob, microwave, fridge & freezer, toaster, coffee maker/kettle plus plenty of plates/cups/glasses/cutlery etc everything you might need really. The Bathroom however is tiny, only just enough room for the sink toilet and shower, no space to put anything down.

There is a very small safe for rent, which at 20 euro's per week is bit expensive for an essential safety item, its just big enough for travel documents and a few small items, but you couldn't get a laptop or large slr camera etc. (its common practice to charge for this in Spain, usually about 10-15 euros, but I think these really should be included free item as they do in most Greek hotels.)

There is no reception, but Debbie who runs the place is usually around early mornings and is friendly and informative, the cleaners usually around mid morning-early afternoon.

Overall its a great location and with great views.

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms have a semi private patio and direct access to the garden/pool so would suit grou...

Fantastic views above the beach, private pool, and convienent location to shops and a small supermarket. The apartment is roomy enough for four adults, clean, and the staff are very helpful in giving advice to local eateries. Remember to bring your own toiletries, because they do not supply anything. Request a room on the second floor(better view with a balcony)

The place has a great location, with outstanding views of the ocean and sand dunes. It is also very central. It has a pool that is not heated, which means it is not warm enough for most to swim in until Easter. It also lacks WiFi which is an issue for many, including us. The beds were also hard, but again this is common in this price range.
A great value for the location. I would highly recommend it to those who like to sit on their balconies and enjoy looking at the ocean and people (the sea promenade goes right past the hotel). The staff are friendly and helpful, although the reception is not onsite.

Room Tip: The first floor rooms have large areas with direct access to the pool, but limited views of the ocea...

Los Caribes is all about location. This is a small complex of 8 apartments and one duplex situated on the promenade at the top of a cliff. The views from our apartment (24) was magnificent- the whole length of the beach and the dunes in Maspalomas. The balcony was huge and quite private. Great place for breakfast and apéritif while the sun goes down. The complex is quiet- I guess it depends on who the other guests are.

The complex is a nice distance from the high-rise hotels and loud shopping centers that blight Playa del Ingles. Taxi rides to the Yumbo Centre cost less than €5 and if you want to go th Maspalomas beach and Faro it costs only €7!

The apartment is basic, but quite large. One can cook with two rings and microwave.

On the negative side, the beds were just way too hard- and I like hard beds. The apartment was basic, but that was fine

Room Tip: Ask for an apartment upstairs close to the promenade (best views)- Apt 24 is the best!

Los Caribes is one of a long row of sea-front boutique hotels on the south side of Avenue de Madrid, which are all mature, with nice gardens, only ground-plus-one storey high, and right on the promenade above a great beach. Its location is absolutely perfect, in that it has a perfect compromise of surroundings, access to beach and town and quietness, and is a nice place to hang out, not merely a place to sleep. As such, it is the complete opposite of the concrete block multi-storey 'apart-hotels' elsewhere in the town.

The pool isn't huge, but at 12.5m long, it's adequate for swim exercise, and is very clean, and only 10 steps from the downstairs apartment patio doors - so you walk out your bedroom, pull on your cossie, and fall straight into the pool! The pool and garden area are enclosed enough to be private, not overlooked from the promenade (like some others in the Madrid row), and the view to the other side of the pool is the beautiful shrubs and flowers of the neighbouring gardens.

You walk out the coded front gate onto the promenade, and it's only a leiruely dander for a few minutes onto the beach, water sports, fine restaurants (Sunset Bay is brilliant), good hangout bars, gym club, beauty and therapy parlours, etc, etc. It's a lovely, pedestriansed little area with minimum racket but a nice buzz, and the Mono (Chillout Bar and Dive Centre, overhanging the beach) stays open with a mellow atmosphere until at least 3 in the morning. If you leave Los Carbes by the back coded gate, you can park your car right next to your apartment, and there's very easy access uptown (to the Kasbah, and other plazas), around town, and out of town.

The kitchen is great - everything works, including the big fridge and proper freezer; so if you're wise, take a taxi or drive to Lidl as soon as you arrive, and stock up on lovely local fruit breakfasts and fresh salad lunches for a tiny fraction of the nearest convenience 'supermarkets'. Amazingly, the Lidl prices are about the same - and very often cheaper - than the UK! And the wine is less that 2 Euros a bottle.......... So you'll have plenty cash to enjoy fine dinners (many restaurants in walking distance) and activities.

The bathroom is small but adequate, with a good strong shower - no bath. After 2 short showers, you need to wait for the small heater tank to recharge, but its effectively unlimited hot water.

The 2 bedrooms are small, but again more than adequate, with good firm beds, nice bedding, and changed every 2 days. It's nice to have a proper double bed for parents, and 2 full-size single beds for teenagers (although you might have to shuffle around the 2 single beds to your liking to increase floor space). The TV is not my thing - just as well, because I couldn't find any English channels on the TV or satbox (no bid deal to us).

All in all, the lovely surroundings and perfect location merit an overall 5. Only one caution - there is no AC, although the windows all open, and are all security-barred and louvre-shuttered, so you can maintain a nice through draught, or hire some fans. The upstairs apartments get a little more cooling wind, but the downstairs flats I think are better for the instant access stright onto the poolside.

Enjoy!

Los Cribes was excellent for the price and it's brilliant situation by the ocean beach, only a promenade between the property and the beach. The property has only 8 apartments, so it is intimate and quiet. The two bedrooms were a little bit too small for 4 adoults, but reasonable, as well the beds were relatively hard, but it debends of course on taste!

Room Tip: The two bedrooms are a little bit too small for 4 adoults, but reasonable, also you have to share o...
