Hotel Riu Don Miguel
Ranked #16 of 135 Hotels in Playa del Ingles
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 10 July 2014

We stayed at the Don Miguel between 9th and 23rd June. Although on a busy main road, our room faced towards the pool area, so we didn't hear any noise from passing traffic. The hotel reception is welcoming, with a small seating area where there were 4 computers for public use, one of which was connected to a printer, and a small shop that sold various holiday items. Wi Fi was also available. From the reception there is access to the hotel bar, and there is also access to the poolside terrace, where drinks and snacks were served, and from there down to the poolside area itself.
There are plenty of sunbeds and parasols. Because of the design of the building certain areas of poolside were in the shade for long periods of the day, so sun lovers will need to be fairly quickly out of the blocks to get the prime sun bathing spots, although towels could not be left on beds before 09.00.
As well as sunbeds, there were also 5 large beds, under wood slated canopies, to stretch out on, and these were very comfortable, and relaxing.
Being a 3* hotel, pool towels are not provided, so do remember to bring your own.
Off poolside there is a downstairs area where you will find a gymnasium, which was free to use, and the public amenities. There was also a small book library on poolside, the majority were in German, but there were some English ones to read.
For those who prefer the beach, it is about a 20 minute walk away. The hotel does put on a courtesy bus that operates for certain times of the morning and afternoon, and the reception staff will provide you with a user card that needs to be shown to the driver, along with the timetable.
Be careful when catching the bus back to your hotel that you get on the right one! They all look the same, and pull into the same pick up area. There will either be a card in the bus window with your hotel name on it, but if not, just ask the driver.
This is a multi national hotel, so there weren't any daytime activities, and the evening entertainment was limited. The fact that the football world cup was on may also have had a bearing. There was a resident singing duo that performed most nights, and add to this a Polynesian dance troupe, an acrobat and drag act, and a 4 hour plus of Ibiza style dance music! night, which I must admit did appeal to the younger age range, but simply gave me a thumping headache, and that was the sum total of the hotel's entertainment programme.
Our room was fine, lots of storage space, a good size balcony, air conditioning and a separate ceiling fan. There was a small fridge and a good size TV, which were provided free of charge, and a built in safe, which could be hired.
Breakfast was between 0800-1000, and provided a varied choice. There are 2 sittings for the evening meal, 1830-2030 and 2030-2230. You are allocated your sitting on arrival. We asked to be changed from the later sitting to the earlier one, and this was accommodated without any problem. You are allocated a table on the first night, which is then yours for the duration of the holiday.
The hotel policy is for you to settle your account at the end of your holiday so everything was signed for, from the hire of the safe to the drinks purchased in the restaurant.
We found all the staff to be very nice, friendly and polite. Our room was well tended, a nice touch on arrival was receiving a complimentary plate of fruit, and any queries we had were dealt with promptly and efficiently.
All in all it was an enjoyable stay. The resort itself is very large. There are several shopping precincts scattered through it, like the Yumbo centre, or the Kasbah. There is a supermarket just across the road, and there are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from.
Down on the seafront you will find long promenade walks to go on, and access to the dunes.
This was our first visit to Gran Canaria, and although we enjoyed our stay at the Don Miguel, we didn't really find the resort to our liking.

We have been to Gran Canaria many times over the last 8 years, we have stayed at a 4 star Maspalomas Princess once and the 5 star H10 Meloneras Palace twice. We were on a budget last new year so tried the Don Miguel. Given where we stayed before we were apprehensive. We need not have been. We were very pleased with our stay here. We emailed ahead and requested a pool view room which we got. The room was pleasantly decorated and very clean. The communal areas of the hotel have been refurbished to a high level, including the pool and outdoor bar areas. At midday a free cocktail was given out at the pool bar. For dinner you are assigned the same table for the week, we chose to sit outside and it was lovely. The food at this hotel is OUTSTANDING. Really exceptional and better than the 4 and 5 stars we have stayed at in Gran Can. We also ate at the a la carte at an extra 12 euro per head and this was really a very special table serviced meal - deft recommend. We found all of the staff at the hotel pleasant, polite, helpful and with a sense of humour. The hotel is adults only and when we went for new year was 30% same sex couples and 70% straight couples in the 50 plus age bracket. Overall: outstanding food, good service, nice pool area, great value for money

This was our third trip to the Rui Don Miguel in Gran Canaria and very disappointed. This hotel standards drop during the summer months. The food was boring and the staff in the restaurant did not bother to tell people of special events outside. We wanted to book the al a carte part of the restaurant on Saturday evening for a celebration but to our surprise it does not open over the weekend. The rooms were not very clean and towels must be years old. We used to enjoy a good variety of entertainment in the evenings but this time had the same duo four of the seven nights singing the same songs and not very well.
My advise is only go between October and April.
We love Gran Canaria and will go again but not to this hotel

From the outside the hotel looks the part. we were pleased when we pulled up outside it. When we saw our room we were very disappointed. The balcony view was a brick wall and the back entrance to the hotel. The rooms were cold and small. The food in the restaurant was quite disappointing same food every night and not much choice for my partner who doesnt really eat meat except chicken. When we asked if she could have just plain chicken we were more or less told what you see is what you get. The hotel staff were quite ignorant and rude and not a bit helpful especially the night staff. The hotel were fine with anyone who wasnt irish or english and we felt totally out of place. There was no communication. We were getting told off for things that we didnt know the hotel didnt allow. The only people in the hotel who made us feel welcome were the maids. It is a disgrace that we were made to feel the way we did. We spent just as much if not more as some of the guests there and all we wanted was a bit of civility which we got none of and the atmosphere and entertainment was drab to say the least. Nice pool, very clean but that is the only thing i would recommend about it. This is only my second holiday ive ever been on and it has put me off even thinking of another 1 after the way we were treated.

Stayed here for a week with a friend. We had room 152 on the first floor over the main road and across from the Yumbo. Had no problems with noise apart from Saturday night when the bar across had the locals partying but hey it was Saturda!!!

Room was cleaned every day with fresh towels (even when we did not need it) and had good air con.

Food was a little samey but on some nights the cooked meat was very tasty.

Pool area was great though can be a battle to get a good sun lounger (as with any hotel)

Negatives:
Wi-fi - you can get cheaper in other hotels
Entertainment - it was the same singer everynight apart from Saturday when they had a very good House Dj set which made a pleasant change to the usual songs she kept singing over and over.

Reading some of the previous reviews, yes the luggage room is next to the main door, anyone could walk in, but even if they had a key to use, anyone could just ask to use it! Staff where very friendly.

Great location 10 minutes to the beach and a minute to Yumbo (without being too close to hear it every night)

Hotel was wonderful and the staff were very attentive, couldn't do enough for you.
Evening entertainment needs updating, the singer sings the same songs in different order each night and the keyboard is very 80s cheese.
Yumbo centre was ok but We preferred the beach front and kasbah.
Food was yummy and enough to choose from, can only think that the other reviewers were fussy eaters. The only disappointment was we were unable to have a late check out and was going to be charged
double the price to use the al la carte restaurant once we checked out (checked out at 11am and wasn't being picked up until 10.30 at night)
