“What a surprise!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 August 2014

After reading so many bad reviews was dreading the holiday, even on the coach to the airport I was thinking please don't be a dump!
But the outside was clean and tidy so things were looking up.
Inside the check in took awhile as the receptionist couldn't find the room we had booked through lowcostholidays, but as we had the paperwork he gave us a room. We had paid for a 2 bed apartment but was given a 1 room which was set up for 2 people and on the 13th floor, the view was of the sea and the apartment was quite roomy, it was also clean and well looked after.
We had a 2nd room booked with our party and that was a small studio with 2 single beds together and little more room but this overlooked the pool and again was clean, but this was on the 2nd floor, so a big difference luckily the daughter and her friend were both 16 so we didn't see this as a problem.
We did ask about the 2 bedroom apartment and was offered 1 on the 4th floor, this was very roomy with a balcony overlooking the front entrance and it also overlooked the sea, we choose to stop in the 13th floor room.
Meals although the buffet area isn't massive the food was always well cooked was tasty and warm. You had a choice of about 4 different main things but don't expect the same choice regarding pudding. We only had bacon on the Tuesday but it was abit salty, which they tended to put on the potatoes a lot of too.
The staff aren't overly friendly but they weren't rude or anything. The maid doesn't come on Thurs or Sun.
The all inclusive was supposed to finish at midday on the last day but we still got drinks and food till we left at 5pm. Drinks were supposed to be 1 per person and per wristband, but we were going up for each other and they were happy to give you a drink at the end (11pm) to take to your room.
Visit the rooftop terrace for some more views etc.
The only fault is no air conditioning and the lifts (there are 3) are very slow.
All in all we had a great holiday, get your sunbed early as they are always gone by half nine/ten.
Although we would go to the hotel again we wouldn't as there are just too many steps around the resort, shops are also wide spread.
Catch the Land train from just up the street and a bus to the aqualand cost the 4 of us 10.80 euros return.
Wifi it is 20euros for 1 device for the 7 days and I think it was 6euros for a day. We asked as we had the 2 girls who wanted to use their phones and so we paid for the 7 day package which cost 27euros for upto 5 items, and this can be used all over the place as there are 1200 hotspots, it is also valid for 2 years so unless you use it everyday (like the 2 girls did) you can use it for your next hols and according to the leaflet it works in any of the Canary islands.

Room Tip: Wifi signal gets worse the higher your room.

We have been to corona roja 3 times now.

We are a family of 5 and first came across this place as it was the cheapest that came up on a comparison site.

A lot of people have wrote a lot of negative things about the hotel and some of it I agree with but you have to remember what you're paying.

On our last visit we paid about €12 pppn all inclusive. The food is not going to win any awards but I never ate anything I didn't like and was always a variety of different things. With all the drinks on top I doubt they actually made any profit out of us.

They have refurbished the 2 outdoor pools so ignore any old comments about broken tiles and scum floating on the water as they are no longer an issue. The pool is in shade from 3pm but some areas around pool still have sun until 6.

The rooms are basic but cleaned 5 days a week. Some are better than others but majority have good size balconies.

The location of the hotel is good. 3min from bus station/taxi rank. Tropical centre has good entertainment in evenings so we usually went there for drinks and to watch a show.

The is quite a bit of noise from bar on hotel next door and bin men.

Our biggest problem with the hotel in past 3 years has been the other guests. You do get groups of young lads and girls but its a good mix of families from different countries. This year some families seemed hell bent on creating trouble because they didn't like the hotel. They were running around with air horns and putting up posters for a pool party. Then they moan when they were told off. One person approached a new arrival getting off the coach and told them how horrible the hotel was. Not what anyone would want.

My top tip is to take a fan in your case and have window closed at night then you wont hear the noise outside.

The staff are all helpful and most are working hours past their shift end so its understandable they might not all have a beaming smile.

For us we find the corona roja a great place to stay. Dont expect too much more than a good clean place to sleep and somewhere to eat when you dont wish to venture out. Then you wont be dissapointed.

We have been in the past twice in Corona Roja. The next time we are there 27.12.2014-10.1.2015. The hotel is worn, but the location is excellent. Beach and Tropical-shopping-center are right next door. The balcony is large and it is also sunny. Two-week vacation from Oulu (Finland) cost flights € 1700, inexpensive.

Room Tip: 5 floor or the upper

We hadn't been away for over 8 years. When we booked we were told this was a 3* family hotel. We said we had a child and was told there was entertainment! Well it's not a 3* it's 2* and there's no entertainment at all. We booked all inclusive and did not budget for having to go out every evening, due to the bordem of this hotel. One evening we stayed in and thought we would watch a film on tv .. which you had to pay for 1euro an hour. When we turned it on there was an open porn channel! which was on all the time as I checked in the morning that's child friendly? discusting. The food was basic and not much variety, same everyday mostly fried, greasy food. Apartment was dirty, dated and falling apart. 1 pillow each when I asked for more, I was rudely told there wasn't any. Single beds in bedroom advised that all rooms are single beds. Pool area ok but not enough sun parasols to shade yourself. Pool in shade after 2pm as sun goes behind hotel so pool becomes dark and cold. NO lilos or balls in pool! Reception staff are rude and abrupt, bar staff OK apart from the male. This hotel is not child friendly at all. Children were all bored and constantly moaned at by staff about being wet from the pool or having a laugh splashing in pool. It is like a prison, regimented. Rooms cleaned, but still stains on clean sheets and if you walked bare foot in apartment your feet were black! Very noisy at night as bar opposite and rubbish cart at 4am! Avoid this place. Only advantage near to beach, shopping centre / restaurants and bus station.

Room Tip: Higher level for nice views and large balcony

Absolutely shocked at the state of the hotel, it's stuck in a time warp (60's/70's). Manager was extremely rude on numerous occasions ie threatened to call the police as some very young children had a beach ball and a rubber ring in the pool. No a/c, food poor, pigeon in dinning room and cockroaches in our room. Very noisy right through the night at the front of the hotel. Huge fight from 2.30-4.30am!!! in the room next door between a party of lads. Worst holiday ever!

Hi,

We are still here and I thought I would share my day 3 experience of the hotel during our total of 11-nights all-inclusive stay.

ARRIVAL: we got here for 1pm and was advised that our 2-bed apartment was not ready and was being cleaned and we would have to wait half an hour, we were told that it was lunch time so to grab some food and collect the key at about 1.30pm. We made our way to the somewhat average sized restaurant, with below average choices for the buffet food. There was hot dogs, burgers, pasta, pizza and chips, a salad bar, and some bread and soup. Ok, so we thought hmmmm not much variety (compared to other all-incl places we have stayed in but bearing in mind they were 3-star and above) but the food was hot and plentiful. The hotel has only 1-bar and this is located outside the restaurant entrance and the bar lady was really nice and came to us and said that as we were AI we could bring in alcoholic drinks / soft drinks to have with out meals..... However in the restaurant itself there is hot and cold vending machines (restricted to AI guests only though) there is absolutely no dessert selection except for a bit of fruit and is applies to all meals.... For some reason they dont provide this.... Anyway, we ate and the food was absolutely fine, nice and hot and we had our fill.

We made our way back to reception at 1.40pm and was told it would take another half hour as the roon was still not ready. We bid our time and at 2.30 was still advised that due go a number of guests checking out that day there was too many rooms to clean and that the room would not be ready till 3pm.

Wo and behold - 3pm we were given our key to apartment 1312. We happily made our way up (there are 3-lifts and you dont have to wait too long for one to come along) got into the room AND......... ok so it was very spacious and clean BUT it absolutely smelled of vomit! We are a family of 5 - 2 adults and 3-children .... The kids room was fine, but our room stank as if someone had had projectile vomit....... There was no way we could have stayed in that room. We disgruntly made our way back down to reception, kids and luggage in tow to complain,

The staff on reception are very pleasant and very helpful - thats one thing we cannot fault, they obviously knew what had gone on up in room 1312 and did not hesitate at all to give us another 2-room keys to go and check if we preferred any of those rooms instead. We selected a room on the 7th floor. It was clean and didnt smell.

APARTMENTS: the saying goes that you get what you pay for. The rooms are extremely basic, yet clean. There is NO AIR CONDITIONING unless you rent one for about 60-euros per week. However, we have got a lovely balcony and it's not stifling hot at all. You have to pay for the TV, which we havent bothered with at all, as our children brought their ipads with them so we paid 32-euros to have wifi on 5-gadgets for the duration of our stay, which we thought was very reasonable. These can then be used anywhere in the hotel and the wifi is very good.

Other than toilet rolls and towels (which dont smell too great) thats about it, be sure to pack your toiletries! The bedrooms only have 2-single beds in each, so we have had to join ours up as our little one refuses to sleep on the couch.

MEALS: breakfast is served from 8-10am and is actually pretty good, a selection of bacon, sausages, beans, cold meat, cheeses, croissants, cereals, toaster and one fruit with plain yoghurt.

LUNCH: served from 1-3pm, which i have already described above.

TEA TIME: 4-5pm and theres a couple of cold cakes that you can have

EVENING MEAL: served from 6-9pm and a basic but hot selection, you will not go hungry unless you are extremely fussy.

DRINKS: the all inclusive bar is open from 11am to 11pm, locally sourced drinks. However, they have 2-slush machines and they have proper pepsi etc... I cannot fault the drinks at all... But they are locally produced. The wine wasnt very nice and they have one-beer on tap... Which is nice.

ENTERTAINMENT: THERE IS NONE! Other than a random bloke who sings badly during the evening meal, but thats about it... Nothing else, not even music at any time of the day.

KIDS ENTERTAINMENT: ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AT ALL.

POOLS: there are 3- okish pools, one inside (for quiet swimming) and 2-outdoor. They are very clean and ample for our stay... You arent allowed to use any lilos / balls in the pools at all.

ROOF GARDEN: this is lovely and on the 15 floor, its got the artificial grass and is kept lovely, it would have benefitted from a small pool up there, but theres an outside shower to cool down... It has some lovely views.

STAFF: all the staff have been extremely nice, we cannot fault this at all....

DO's and DONT'S: there appears to be a lot of house rules her, you are absolutely not allowed to take any food from the restaurant to any other place in the hotel. Yet the self caterers can. You cant even take drinks up to your bedroom (however, we have sneaked a few up to our rooms)

THE IDIOTS UPSTAIRS: ok so the rooms are not expected to be sound proof, but the people above us have some furniture fetish, where at night they seem to scrape the furniture around the apartment, we put up with it the first night but last night had to complain as they were still doing it at 12am! Reception sent security up to them and it stopped but they started again at 6.30am this morning!

GUESTS: there is a mixture of nationalities, brits, french, italians, germans etc... And have all been very pleasant. Theres also a nice mixture of families, couples and young people, who have not been rowdy or any trouble at all so far.

LOCATION: the hotel is in a great location, 2-mins from a nice small beach and a short walk to a little shopping complex called Tropical. We havent had a chance yet to go to the Yumbo centre but have been told its about 5-euros in a cab.

The beach is nice but does get packed out and the sand is a little black, but soft.

FINAL COMMENTS: ok so we paid £2400 for a family of 5 for 11-nights all inclusive. We cannot expect a 5-star hotel, for the amount we paid. THIS IS A 2-star hotel, and i said before you get what you pay for..... All in all its not too bad, just dont expect any frills whatsoever....

Room Tip: The higher up you go, the better the views and apparently you will get a balcony.
