“Roca Verde Apartments ' Great location Vs Bad service '”
Reviewed 28 November 2013

My partner and i have been travelling to Gran Canaria for many years to get away from the gloom juice that is the British weather , and with Gran Canaria having a good year round constant of sunshine our choice in November was clear . Over the years we have stayed in Green Sea Aparthotel , Parquemar and Miraflor bungalows all in Playa del Ingles, we this time decided on the Roca Verde Apartments . Mainly due to it's good location to the coast and beach access and also only costing around 4 euros to the Yumbo , this seemed the perfect choice for our needs. We booked with Sunshine Holidays online - supposedly a tailored holiday . On arrival after our flight , we were both greeted at reception, our key sorted and then asked to produce our British passports , then after a brief phone conversation by the gentleman in spanish we were then told '' sorry your not here , your in Los Cactus now '' , which was down the road towards the grizzly rowdy Kasbah. After a week of having to stay at the drab and dowdy Los Cactus , we finally got to move back over to the Roca Verde , our actual booked hotel . The ' Roca Hell ' ensued ......We had to beg for basics which we never obtained , NO change of towels or bedding until 5 days on , or toilet roll replacement at all ( all the very basic things you might at least expect while on holiday ) We ended up washing our own hotel towels , which cost us 8 euros . Our bathroom was then sanded and painted suddenly early wednesday morning , making the bathroom out of service for some time . While our bin bags in our kitchen area began to build up , not pleasent after 5 days . We asked the reception and cleaner on numerous occasions about our situation , always to be told '' tommorrow '' . Need i say more . The location is good and ideal for the beach , chemist locally and 3 supermarkets handy for supplies . Be aware if you have breakfast , you will encounter the grumpy waiter ' Dracula ' , though Spanish he will only converse with you in ' German ' , and has a very big problem with people from the British Isles ( Worryingly a young girl on reception was fully aware of his attitude and rude manner towards us ) If you must eat here , request Fernando , he was a true gentleman and always friendly and hospitable . We took advantage of the collect pizza service on numerous occasions , which you can take back to your apartment , and after a long day around Maspalomas dunes , this was ideal for us . The Building has obviously seen a better age and time in which it was built for , and the 2 pools are always clean , though the list of restrictions are a little over the top . The main grouping staying at Roca Verde being mostly Norwegian , Dutch and German ( as we were the only two English ) , all of which very friendly and always said good morning . It's just a shame the staff at Roca Verde appeared more like they had been shipped in from an episode of 'Faulty towers'. Adios !

All the staff we met, was nice and helpful. Rooms need some paint and renovation but for the price those are ok, and had all the amenities we needed. Location is good, area was quiet enough but still short walking distance from beach, bars and restaurants. They also have restaurant in hotel, which we tried couple of times and had good meals. Only real issue was too small waterheaters in rooms, (only 15 litres), shower gives warm water only for one person, if you use water very sparingly. Next person have to wait 40 minutes for boiler to heat more water...

Room Tip: Rooms in reception side are quieter than on the pool side and has sunshine `till noon.

I really liked the hotel. For a bit less than $300 dollars it was good value. Spacious room with balcony. Great location for beach and nightclubs. If I go back to PDI I will definitely check out Roca again, good value.

  • Liked — Spacious rooms, kitchenette, the price
  • Disliked — not the fanciest hotel

We went in March 2005 and had a very nice stay at this hotel (contrary to previous reviewer's perceptions). It was a different time of year and we did not spend a lot of time at their pool nor did we use the cafe on the grounds, but the place was nice and well managed for the budget traveller. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and the room was clean and although nothing fantastic, it was comfortable and we thought it was actually a great location. Our room has a partial ocean view too and the balcony was comfortable.
It was convenient because of the kitchnette helped with breakfasts and making lunches to take to the beach. Actually, the food down at the beach side shopping center was quite inexpensive and served quickly, but you'd get tired the same type of menu items so it was nice to be able to cook -even if not every day. The location was very nice too -- less than a minute to the promenade above the beach and just a couple of minutes more to the sand. There was a small grocery in the building on the corner across the street and there were lots of restaurants nearby or on the beach shopping - restaurant. The bus to the airport came right down Ave de la Madrid, so we did not use a taxi to get back to LPA.
The hot water ran out while I was taking a shower one day, but when we told the desk clerk, he called a maintenance man who promptly came and replaced the compressed gas tank. It was handy having the coin-operated Internet PC in the lobby.
I would definitely go back and stay there again. It suited our budget(less than $300 for a week for 2 persons) and had the basic without hassles. [We didn't see any cockroaches in March, but you had to realize that The Canaries are semi-tropical islands - there are few such places that might not have bugs - although I repeat we did not see any.]

I had only found one website with details of this apartment complex and it stated basic - for the budget traveller only. Phoned my travel broker who informed me this was not the case and the apartments were fine. Very basic accommodation. Balconies all rusty, dodgy area, waterline at pool all scum, locals using the pool on a daily basis and bringing their dogs, staff using pool facilities to entertain girlfriends and their charges(kids). Didn't get the same bill twice for the same drinks??. Bills handwritten when others were being drawn from the till??. Glass at pool side, amenities for the kids ie pool table, air machine - broken. Self catering - there were no kettle in the room to make T. No toaster or microwave, 2 small rings and one pot. Cockroaches in room on 3 occasions.
