“Just booked another annual trip”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 July 2012

We go to Heidelberg every Labor Day Weekend and have so much fun! It is a little 'older' but is well maintained and very family friendly. Don't get too excited about luxury cabins! But that is part of the charm- throw in some pots and pans and beach towels, get ready to live in your bathing suits, turn the kids loose (lots of families) and have fun. Our group has grown to over 30 people, all families, and the kids can't wait to go back every year. Bring quarters for the game room!!

Room Tip: We like the cabins closer to the pool

We really appreciate the positive comments and look forward to seeing all of you Labor Day, if not before. We love hosting all the families, large and small, that return to visit us every year. We have made some improvements since last year and really hope that you and your family like them as much as our other customers seem to. See you soon!

We spent three days here, and found it really lacking. Management was rude and unapproachable, the kitchen had no pots/pans, plates, silverware, the air conditioning was non-functional, the pool was drained, internet access was unavailable, and an inadequate supply of towels were provided for our family. When we asked for more towels, we were told we needed to bring our dirty ones to the office for an even exchange. Trains run by the property and blow their whistles throughout the night. Yes, it was off season, but we paid well over $300 per night to stay at the Rock House.

Chris M, General Manager at Heidelberg Lodges, responded to this review, 6 April 2012
Dear Susan,
I do apologize that your stay with us wasn’t as pleasant as either of us would have liked. I appreciate you providing such specific feedback, as it will help us continue to provide a great guest experience for everyone. We do typically receive rave reviews from our guests, so rest assured I will look into these issues and make any necessary adjustments.

I am sorry that I wasn’t aware of any concerns about rudeness on the part of our staff or problems with your air conditioning. I would have addressed both issues immediately. But, specifically addressing your other concerns, you are correct that the pool was closed and the trains do pass close to our property. I apologize for any disruption to your stay. Unfortunately, our regular pool maintenance had extended past our expected deadline due to the recent rains. However, our beautiful pools are now open and in great shape and our great swimming area on the Comal River is always open year-round. As for the trains, the City of New Braunfels will begin the installation of new train “quiet zones” in May, which will help minimize the noise for our guests.

Thanks to guest feedback like yours, I am currently reviewing our towel policy and the option of providing dishes for our guests. We are also working right now to extend the internet access from the pool area to cover the entire property.

We all work hard to provide a great experience for our guests and have many loyal customers. I do hope that you will consider coming back to Heidelberg Lodges and becoming one of those loyal customers. Please contact me if there is anything I can do for you in the future.

We absolutely love the Heidelberg Lodges in New Braunfels. We have been coming back to the same place for the last 18 years. The best rooms are located within the pool area, rooms 1, 3 and 5. If noise from upstairs doesn't bother you then those are the three best rooms in the place. If noise gets to you (squeaky floors), then stay upstairs in rooms 2, 4 and 6. The best part about Heidelberg is the enormous pool for all ages, the game room for the kids and the wonderfully cold Comal River right down the slope from the lodges.

Every year we go we stay 5-6 days just enjoying the pool and the river, then we will devote one day to Schlitterbahn water park. The lodges are well maintained, the pool is always clean, the staff will bend over backwards for you. Inside the game room you can find pool tables, ping pong tables and video games. They even sell blue bell ice cream behind the counter.

At Heidelberg you bring every thing you need to make your meals. The lodges have a full kitchen with a sink, a stovetop (oven is shut off) and a nice fridge. There is a table and chairs to eat inside or you can eat outside on your wood table with benches. What they don't provide are the utensils, cookware and dishes. We usually keep a large Tupperware container filled with these items and just store it in our garage for next year. We pick most of these items up at the dollar store and just keep them from year to year. Don't forget items like paper towels, dish detergent, soap, paper plates, utensils, spatulas, etc....And also, you can bring your water floats to the pool or to the Comal river. No glass containers around the pool. I also like to pack a couple of strings of party lights to hang outside our front door, and an extension cord. Pack your suntan lotion!

Room Tip: Rooms 1-6 are the best because they are within the gated pool area.

Great Family Vacation Getaway- Heidelberg Lodge was so much fun! Great location in a quiet New Braunfels neighborhood, full of deer! right on the Comal river. Our girls (ages 10 and 12) spent hours swinging from a rope and jumping out of trees and off rocks into the river. They also loved the game room, the huge pool and meeting lots of new friends.

We stayed in a lower cabin and thankfully there was no one above us until our last night. It was pretty loud and we could hear their every step. I know they weren't going out of their way to stomp around, it's just not very sound proof. As other reviewers have said the kitchen is not stocked with anything other than a fridge, stove, microwave and coffee maker. We bought and left coffee filters and plastic utensils for the next people. I do think it would be nice if the owners would take the time and a little bit of money and buy dishes, silverware and some pots and pans at Goodwill to stock the kitchen.

We found the office staff to be very friendly and helpful. We had forgotten something important at home and had a friend mail it to us and they got it to our cabin immediately when it came in.

Heidelberg Lodges is a staple in NB. 4 of us (2 couples) decided to take a trip to float the river before summer ended. We stayed in a 2 bedroom although it's really only a 1 bedroom. The 2nd bedroom is open to the living room, which is pretty shady marketing. The lodge has a kitchen and living room but is very small. The kitchen table doesn't fit in the kitchen when you actually use the chairs so we had to put it in the living room. And the microwave took up so much room of counter space we moved it to living room too. The bathroom was tiny and the shower had almost no water pressure. A garden hose would have been better.

But my biggest complaint about this place is the price. It's way over-priced. Some argue it's bc you're on the Comal River but you're on a crappy part of the comal (no good fishing or swimming and it doesn't connect to the rest of the river). This place is really just a step up from camping but cost 10X more. My friends tell me they stayed there as kids and that the nostalgia is worth it but I can't justify it.

Just back from a 3-night stay at the Heidelberg with friends. This place is like stepping back in time -- in the best possible sense. Super friendly and accommodating staff, beautiful grounds, very laid-back atmosphere. Ideal for a family getaway or a long weekend with friends.

And contra the earlier reviews, the staff was all very eager to help. We locked our keys in the room one day, and they immediately walked over and let us back in.
