“Pleasant, Restful”
Review of New Braunfels

New Braunfels
Reviewed 13 June 2014

We spent time driving around the historic district of New Braunfels. It was good to see the restoration of the courthouse, square and other buildings. Parking was easy to find, and there were shops and food places aplenty. We browsed for antiques, clothing, and accessories. Depends on how much you want to shop and eat as to how long you would want to spend in the area. It would probably be neat to stay in some of those downtown hotels that are restored. We enjoyed peaking through the foyers and reading the plaques describing the history of the buildings.

The square is close to other attractions around town, like the waterpark and tubing.

Nice downtown area with plenty of free parking.

Phoenix Saloon had a good atmosphere and (free) live music even during the week. We were fortunate enough to catch "BRIAN POUNDS" (formerly on "The Voice"). He was good and since it was an intimate crowd, he personalized it with the back-stories about the songs he was singing.

The "Pour Haus" was really lively with a mixed age crowd. Loved the outdoor atmosphere. Fun for adults of all ages. They had huge "jenga" blocks that could be played at your table, bean bag games, live music, etc.

"Naegelin's Bakery" is a MUST! Oldest Bakery in Texas (and easily the most delicious!). Husband ate a sausage kolaches
and thought it was wonderful. I ate a cherry turnover and loved every bite.

The "Sophienberg Museum" was one of the BEST museums of local history I've ever been to! The displays were absolutely wonderfully done, the videos were very good, etc. Would HIGHLY recommend visiting this museum!

Our downtown circle (roundabout), is simply beautiful. The gazebo and the newly restored courthouse really do amp up the charm of our beautiful city. When the city turned on the Christmas lights this year is was raining and it was cold, but a few brave souls (us and 3 grandchildren) stayed to enjoy the festivities. Every night driving through downtown New Braunfels during the Christmas season is a reminder of a slower, quieter time.

Clean, pretty, peaceful. Don't forget to stop by the oldest bakery in Texas (founded in the 1800s) which is right off the square on S Seguin Avenue: Naegelin's Bakery. They have tables where you could sit, enjoy coffee and one of their pastries while gazing on the square. Very easy to park your car and just walk around.

The Plaza in the center of New Braunfels is so very quaint and wonderful. The ancient gazebo and the fountain are just marvelous. One is reminded of New England. It is so very pleasant to find this treasure still in existence and so well maintained.
