Description: Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

“Wow, do not miss”
Reviewed 3 June 2014 via mobile

We were on a 6 week road trip and like to hit Diner, Drive In and Drive restaurants and have always had good to great food. This is not a triple D restaurant but it was the best place we ate at. Started with a "small" order of rings, they are huge and the best ever. The baby backs were the special so I tried that, they were great and the biggest half rack I ever had. My wife ordered the steak salad, it was perfect with lots of great steak cooked perfectly. Also, heard praise from other tables about the chicken fried steak. If you are in the Texas Hill Country you will not want to miss this place. Also, very good prices.

“Always great!”
Reviewed 3 June 2014

We travel to New Braunfels several times a year to visit family. We always make a point to eat at the Gristmill. Even though Gruene is getting a bit touristy, the Gristmill has not become a tourist trap. The food quality is excellent. The service time is reasonable, and if the weather is good, even the long wait for a table can be a pleasure in their "cocktail" area. There's not a bad item on the menu, but better than half the time, I go for the ribs, and our table typically starts with an onion ring appetizer. The salad dressings are made in-house. The greens are fresh, so all the salads are a great option too. As long as they don't stray from the winning formula of hot, quality food and good service, we will be back.

“Simply one of the best”
Reviewed 3 June 2014 via mobile

This restaurant is one of a kind. From there really intresting chalk board control center ( ya gotta go to understand) to the great wait staff to the Excellent food, you will love this place. Nestled among the trees on the bank of the river make this a special place for one diner or a group. I think they seat like 700 people so the wait is never too long and always worth the wait if you end up having to. You'll love it !

Wonderful setting on the river- music and drinks outside while you wait for a table. Service was excellent! Husband had the rib eye- excellent! I had the chicken fried steak- which is their signature dish, very good!

“Busy but great”
Reviewed 2 June 2014 via mobile

There seven in our party so we were told it would be a twenty minute wait but it was more like ten. The staff were friendly and the service was great. There was a varied menu and we all had plenty to eat. The onion rings were huge we ordered a large portion between us to start with but our server advised us to go smaller and were we glad as we couldn't finish them. The food was all well cooked and presented.
