Description: Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

My husband and I met family at the Grist Mill for lunch on our 2nd day in Texas. We thought there was going to be a wait, but we put our names in and no sooner then 10 minutes went by and we were being seated (group of 6). We both had burgers (which were HUGE and yummy...got mine with the tomatillo sauce) we also shared onion rings (awesome!). We liked it so much we ate there again our last evening in Texas. That night he had a steak that was so tender it melted in our mouths and had a wonderful flavor. I had the chicken with the tomatillo sauce and beans....there was nothing left on my plate!! We're from the east coast and we cannot get sauce like that anywhere here....it was SO GOOD!

Great place for food and enjoying the afternoon by the river! Their portions are generous. Don't pass on the sangrias.

We were on a 6 week road trip and like to hit Diner, Drive In and Drive restaurants and have always had good to great food. This is not a triple D restaurant but it was the best place we ate at. Started with a "small" order of rings, they are huge and the best ever. The baby backs were the special so I tried that, they were great and the biggest half rack I ever had. My wife ordered the steak salad, it was perfect with lots of great steak cooked perfectly. Also, heard praise from other tables about the chicken fried steak. If you are in the Texas Hill Country you will not want to miss this place. Also, very good prices.

We travel to New Braunfels several times a year to visit family. We always make a point to eat at the Gristmill. Even though Gruene is getting a bit touristy, the Gristmill has not become a tourist trap. The food quality is excellent. The service time is reasonable, and if the weather is good, even the long wait for a table can be a pleasure in their "cocktail" area. There's not a bad item on the menu, but better than half the time, I go for the ribs, and our table typically starts with an onion ring appetizer. The salad dressings are made in-house. The greens are fresh, so all the salads are a great option too. As long as they don't stray from the winning formula of hot, quality food and good service, we will be back.
