A beautiful place to spend a day............... perfect place to walk, stroll, and take in nature. There are many seasonal events throughout the year such as the Butterfly Release ( a big hit with children ) , the Scarecrow Festival, and Christmas Strolls. Make sure you take the bayou boat tour.

Shangri LA Botanical Gardens is clearly the best garden attraction on the Gulf Coast. Free of the architectural absurdities of Galveston's pyramid-infested Moody Gardens, Shangri La celebrates the interaction of landscape and design by an apt combination of native flora, imported specimen plants, and superb rustic but modernist structures. Although the garden--actually, the forest--suffered from a series of hurricanes between 2005 and 2008, the installation is in some way better for the catastrophe. The clearer, more open post=storm vistas and the increase in light allow for experimentation with color (and with the small plants, whether flowers or shrubs, that produce it). There is a bit of idolization with respect to the garden founder, an inheritor rather than earner of wealth whose somewhat naive theories of art are inserted into the landscape on monumental pillars and who is praised, in one indoor exhibition, for terrifying his employees with the threat of dismissal. There are also a few service problems. The optional boat excursion is unregulated, with noisy visitors (especially children) interfering with the experience and with well-meaning but under-informed guides doing little more than passively waiting for questions. The cafe offers a tasty sandwich but, on the day of our visit, ran out of its special-of-the-day, a soup, in the middle of the lunch hour. Those minor quibbles pale in comparison to the delightful and tasteful environment, which is definitely a surprise considering its proximity to a major interstate and a highly industrialized area. Shangri La is definitely a rewarding (and inexpensive) visit.

Lots of pretty flower gardens with walkways to make the touring easier. Don't miss the narrated tour on the bayou on an electric boat. Another " must see" is the rookery. Handicap access. A well thought out design.

The place is the same as the first attraction listed. I loved the place and need to find somewhere like this closer to home.

I have been planning a trip here for months. It was better than I expected. The egrets were nesting and the water reflections were beautiful. The flowers were nice and the landscaping was perfect. I would go back tomorrow if it was closer.
