This is a lovely park, but you must commit to going as it's a nearly 30-mile drive in to the ranger station on a windy dirt/rock road. You'll be happier in a high clearance and/or 4WD vehicle. Took a few nice short hikes. Nice views. It would be great for someone looking for true back-country opportunities. Somehow picked up a nail in our tire while there.

I would suggest that you go here if you are headed to Big Bend National Park. Go by way of the river road, which is just spectacular. Wonderful views along the way. Even more remote than the National Park and just as lovely. Very few places to stay so plan ahead.

The state park is much more laid back than the national park. They have some great mountain biking trails that will challenge even the No Fear crowd. They allow you to take your pets is on a leash. A must see is the drive up 170 to Presidio. Might be one of the best I've ridden the Harley on. Some Serious elevation changes, and if your lucky (or as my wife says Crazy) you can get airborne on some of them.

It's a beautiful and very lightly visited area. Many great trails and the mountains and desert are lovely. Claret cacti were blooming. The 27 mile gravel road to access the area is rough and windy and takes at least 1 1/2 hours.

If you are headed to the Big Bend National Park make the time to spend at least one day here at the state park. Start at the Barton Warnock Visitor Center for maps and recommendations. Staff was set up to handle the spring break crowds. You can easily spend an hour in the interpretive center and touring the cactus gardens. Don't miss the overlook point for some spectacular views. Absolutely do the drive to Presidio and stop to hike along the way. I recommend the Closed Canyon Trail and Hoodoo Trail which each talk about an hour. Mountain biking in this park is fabulous. There are some awesome primitive camping spots with some of the most amazing views I've ever seen. Adding camping here to my bucket list!
