“Enjoyed the buffalo soldiers”

Amazing exhibit and exciting to bring your family to if you have a couple extra hours in the San Angelo area. The cleanliness and amount of people there was surprising, but it is the summer months, so nothing unexpected.

“Buffalo Soldiers!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 May 2014

Fort Concho is a well preserved example of the forts built in the later 19th century on the Texas and Oklahoma frontiers. Many of the original sandstone buildings remain with displays of barracks, headquarters, officer quarters, and the hospital. A short film details the construction and use of the fort, with special attention to the Negro Cavalry units usually stationed there known as the Buffalo Soldiers, supposedly because their hair reminded the Indians of the wooly mane of the American bison. These units successfully fought the Commanche and Kiowa tribes, making the land safe for cattle ranchers and other settlers. Well worth the trip.

“Super history for the family”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 February 2014

Best preserved and restored civil war area fort in Texas! Tremendous history, including the Buffalo Soldiers, well presented in numerous buildings. But for something really special, try and come during Christmas at Old Fort Concho. 19th century and early 20th century in a captivating environment. Always on the 1st weekend of December, great shopping, demonstrations, kids events all presented with period wear and atmosphere.

“Step back into History!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 January 2014

There is a little bit of everything at Fort Concho; My all time favorite is Christmas at Old Fort Concho! Venders from across the state come with their rustic goods, Pancakes for breakfast to help support local charities, cannons blasting, vintage calvery marching... Who wouldn't have fun?! Aside from cookie decorating compotitions and art exhibits, one might find refuge in an old barrack or captain quarters and check out artifacts from long ago. Local historians and interested San Angeloans play the role of tour guide and oral historians to onlookers searching for a history long since forgotten.
