“History of Texas”
Reviewed 19 May 2014

If you love history of the making of America, you will love this tour. Stop into the Chamber of Commerce in Schulenburg and pay $4 for a map. Then take the tour by yourself. The paintings and woodwork are very nice. It shows the commitment to faith of early settlers from Europe. You sense their struggles as you roam the adjacent cemeteries. Just the fact that these churches are all over 100 years old, still standing, and the interiors are beautiful.

“Simply Stunning!”
Reviewed 14 May 2014

The Painted Churches Tour is an amazing peek into art, architecture, and history of early Texas settlers. I highly recommend booking a tour ahead of time with the Chamber of Commerce. The fee is quite reasonable and the friendly and knowledgeable guide shares facts, stories, and all manner of interesting tidbits. You'll be surrounded by grace, peace, and beauty as you visit these simply stunning little churches.

“Run! Don't walk!”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

I've driven through Schulenburg for over 20 years and I had no idea I was passing by such hidden treasures! Run! Don't Walk to see these stunning pieces of historical heritages. Tours start at the Schulenburg Chamber of Commerce. You can self tour by buying a $4 map at the chamber and touring them yourselves.

We chose to take a group and hire the docent for $10 per person and a minimum of $40 gratuity to take us on the tour. The church in Dubina is locked, so with the tour guide, we were able to go inside. Plus, the history she shared on the ride there and while at the churches made the tour so enriching. I even learned that the Orphan Train passed through this section of Texas and some of the children were adopted by parish members. Fascinating! Especially since I'm reading "The Orphan Train" book at the moment. And there is another called "A Ride on the Orphan Train."

This summer some of the churches hold festivals. High Hill's is the Sunday before Labor Day. Fried chicken dinners sell out by 1:00pm, so get there by 9:30am and then stay for the events that happen into the evening!

I believe Praha church is going to be closed for a year for restorations beginning in September 2014, so go this summer to see it!

We started our tour at 10:00am, ate lunch at 12 and then toured 2 more until 3:00pm.

Plenty of public restrooms next door to the Chamber. Some restrooms at the churches.

The shop across the street from the chamber does handchurned ice cream. You can call ahead when you are headed back to drop off the tour guide and they will have your orders ready on your arrival.

We also stopped at Wiekel's bakery in LaGrange from Austin as our 1st restroom break and to get coffee and kolaches. Then on the way home, we stopped at Bucee's in Bastrop for our pit stop. Plenty of restrooms!

We ate at Oakridge Smokehouse for lunch. The water tastes awful - which makes the iced tea taste bad too. The food is good (not fantastic) and for $10.95 it includes the drink and dessert. There were 4 types of desserts to choose from and you could go to the buffet unlimited times.

Great trip and I recommend it to all ages!

PS - The Dubina church turns of the ac during the summer to save money - so bring a fan!

“Beautiful and Inspirational”
Reviewed 15 April 2014

The Painted Churches are marvelous hidden treasures among the trees and hills of central Texas. At this time of year (spring) there are beautiful wildflowers everywhere. The churches were painted inside to resemble the cathedrals of Europe. It is well worth the time to look at them. All are also welcome to worship with the congregations during their regular weekly worship times.
