“The Palms Resort - South Padre Island”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 February 2012

I stayed in room 214 and friends stayed in 209 mid-Feb. 2012. This was my second stay at the Palms and I was not dissapointed. The rooms are small, but well-designed, clean and comfortable. Many Palms winter occupants are long-term and referred to as "winter"-Texans" and the best view rooms are usually booked far ahead.

We enjoyed the attached restuarant immensely - it is said to have the bewt tuna on the island.

Staff is friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: North side is quieter, although several occupants had dogs that barked occasionally.

Their name is a bit aspirational; there’s not much about this place that is resort-like. But with the right expectations you can give The Palms two thumbs up. You are directly on the beach. There’s a bar. They serves decent meals. And the rooms are suitable. What else could you want?

You don’t come to the Palms to stay in the room. A small bedroom area is divided from a living area by a ¾ wall. Sufficient kitchen facilities to microwave leftovers, make a sandwich or mix up some margaritas. The wall unit heat/cool/air is the only ventilation you’ll get, the window is hurricane-ready and doesn’t open. We found two nights here to be just fine. We only reserved one night at a time because their 3-day cancellation policy would have forced us into a second night if we weren't happy with our first.

You also don’t come to the Palms to eat. Actually, dinner was great once I adjusted to the fresh-frozen fish or burger options for dinner. The combination fish fry (snapper, shrimp, something else) hit the spot, no complaints. But you don’t drive here to get that. It’s really a matter of convenience.

What you come to the Palms for is a kind of laid back and away-from-the-crowd beach experience. Or in our case, a modestly-priced base camp in the middle of the south island that gave us easy access to our points of interest from the bird board walk near the convention center towards the north to the state park at the very south for our 2 days on SPI. Dinner was convenient on the night we arrived and breakfast the next morning was uncomplicated and fast.

If you’ve got the right expectations about the Palms, you’ll have a good time.

Room Tip: During the heat of the season you might prefer rooms on the shady north side. I my preference is to...

Advised it would be cheaper to book direct, nice tip, so we cancelled our Expedia reservation paid the fee and it was sitll cheaper! Fantastic layout with everything we needed. Bathroom was a little tiny and the remote control a little old but for the price and the location this place is a steal compared to others along the strip. Great restaurant on site if you're not looking to walk to town. Beach access right at our door. If you're going to get a microwave, coffee pot, fridge and sink the "kitchen" could have used a few plates and some cutlery but there were cups and glasses. Not fancy or 4 star by any means but it suited us just fine. Many "winter texans" are staying by the month so it must be good!

First of all, I would like to praise the service level at the front desk. The lady at the front desk was very nice and helpful, and that is about it for this resort.

I was torn between giving 2 or 3 star for this place. I gave it a 3 because of the service by the front desk.

We traveled as a family of 2 adults and 2 young kids. We checked in this resort by accident. Expedia screwed up our reservation at a true resort and they did not have any available room for us so they put us in The Palms Resort and said it is a 4-stars resort.

After dinner, we came to Palms Resort to check in, it turned out the 4-stars resort is a motel. Since it was late and my two little kids were very tired after six hours trip and spending additional hours in the car while I had conversation with Expedia, I checked in the Palms Resort so my kids can rest.

The king size bed was good, but the sofa bed gave me a backache the next morning. The room had kind of moldy smell of an old and dated motel. The flat screen TV could not get any good signal for any channels at all.

I found other better condition hotels for the same price the next morning. Did not try the café or the pool so no comments there.

Room Tip: Just do not expect to have good sleep on the sofa bed!!!

We moved to the Palms after staying at the Holiday Inn Express two nights - where we had a nice room, but terrible internet access - and no beach contact! The beach was two blocks away down a paved street. We could see a bit of water from our 4th floor room, but that was it....We had lunch at the Palms, found they had rooms available, so we packed up and moved for the remaining night, just to check it out for future visits.

Quietstay (May 2011) has provided an exhaustive description of the room, and ours varied only slightly. The bed was effectively a double, not a queen, but ours was not quite as soft as Quietstay's. We had four glasses! There are no utensils, cutlery, etc., so if you want to eat something you need to bring your own or venture out to borrow a spoon or fork from the café. The sink is about the size of a small bar sink. Our refrigerator, however, was full size. I ate my breakfast bar in the room, but cannot imagine cooking and eating a meal there unless storms were brewing offshore! I agree about the view, but in the absence of an elevator a ground-floor room might be more desirable. In any case you can head for the café, have some coffee, and enjoy the view from there! The setup was comfortable for just sitting and reading some email (EXCELLENT WiFi service!) before going out. Our room had a walk-in shower, which was fine.

The office staff were very friendly, as were the café folks. We ate our dinner in the café and the food was well-prepared; the menu was not as extensive as that of some of the larger restaurants, but it was a pleasure to just walk down to the café! There is a strip of flowering plants between the Palms and the sandy beach, and it must be a spectacular sight when they are in full flower. You can walk directly to the beach - bring some kind of beach shoes, as the first section of the path has a hard surfaced cloth laid on top that is very painful for bare feet. There's a hose to rinse off your feet when you return (the sands are slightly oily (remember all that drilling in the Gulf!) and you'll leave ugly marks on the floor if you don't clean your feet. This does not affect the quality of the beach or the water!

There are hooks outside your room for drying bathing suits and beach towels (don't forget to bring towels!).

The Palms is a no-frills, relaxing place - what a beach stay should be! We expect to go back to SPI - not at spring break! - and would be happy to stay at the Palms again. The price-quality ratio is excellent!

Room Tip: If you need a queen-size, select the king-size room. Second floor rooms at the beach end give you a...

We just love .this place! Small rooms but big on service. (only 1 bed per room, but all rooms have a sofa sleeper of some kind) This property was built in the 70's and was updated about 5 years ago. All the rooms have a fridge and microwave, and plenty of room for all your snacks and utensils. They have a great pool, and they are right on the beach. A wonderful cafe is on the property too! Great staff, friendly and helpful. This location puts you right in the middle of the Island. Other resturants and shopping are within walking distance and the free bus (the Wave) will pick you up at the end of the driveway.

Room Tip: if you are comming for the winter months, ask for a room on the south side of the building
