“Would stay again”

This hotel was better than expected. We were surprised by the large size of the room. As promised, the location is right on the beach, and that section of the beach wasn't crowded when we were there. The restaurant/bar is great. Check-in/Check-out was easy. We had a late check-in and it went smoothly. They also gave us an extra hour to check-out on Sunday so we could extend the surf time a little longer. The only downside to this place was the airconditioner in the room. It kept the living area very cool, but the bedroom section didn't get as cool because there is a dividing wall. A ceiling fan helped, but the difference in temp was noticable. Front office staff was friendly and helpful and the housekeeper was EXCELLENT. Take beach towels with you or be prepared to buy some as souvenirs because the hotel didn't offer any. Summary: We had a relaxing beach weekend here, and we would stay at this hotel again.

We looked at the Palms on the beach based almost exclusively on the TripAdvisor ranking and reviews. What a great place! If you are looking for a top of the line resort, then this definitely isn't for you. If you are looking for a reasonably priced, very clean place to stay, then look no further,

We stayed the last week of May 2008, arrived on Monday, left on Friday. The room wasn't ready at check-in, but they only needed an extra 15 minutes to get it finished up.

First Impressions:

The hotel is definitely a throwback. The building itself seems like its the smallest one on the strip, but in a nice, relaxed, laid back kind of way. It is two stories, and there is only one staircase to the upstairs located in the middle of the building on each side, so if you need to park at the end there may be a small walk to get there. It is still closer than any other hotel I've ever stayed at. the parking lot was small, I would say that there are spots for 10-12 cars at most on each side of the hotel.

The doors to the rooms are throwbacks too! Actual metal keys let you into the rooms, not the plastic card keys that are commonplace these days. That was a nice touch. Each room has a large bay window that looks out onto...well not much really. You can see the buildings next to you and that's about it. The hotel advertised views of the gulf, and maybe if you get right at the edge of the window and press your face up to the glass you could see it, but I couldn't. if you walk right outside the rooms though, you can definitely get a great view of the gulf.

The beach was right there. I was actually quite surprised and pleased with the walkway to the sand. We were close enough to the beach that I could just run back to the room to grab a drink or a bite to eat instead of lugging the ice chest down to the beach.

The Staff:

Very nice staff! The nice woman at the front desk walked us to our room to double check if it was ready, and when it wasn't she went ahead and checked us in anyway while letting us know it would be about 15 minutes until it was ready. The maids were very nice and accommodating. Something interesting about this hotel was the they had a doorknob hanger that said "maid service please". i didn't hang it on the door the second day, and sure enough, no maid service. I hung it out on the third day and when we got back the room was very clean, new sheets, towels, but there were no new soaps in the shower (shampoo, etc). The old ones were in the trash because we had used them all. Overall, it kind of seemed that the maids were overworked. When we first got into the room, they had forgotten to clean out the trash under the sink. Then on the third day they forgot the trash can next to the dresser and the soaps. This may be a problem for families, but it wasn't a big deal for a couple on vacation.

Also, if you want a full size fridge, you'll have to request one.

The shower was a little strange. I don't think we ever got how to turn on a warm shower. You had either scalding hot or ice cold. After both getting sunburned, we rather enjoyed the ice cold so I can't actually complain about it. I think if we had asked we could have had the shower in working order but we were red as lobsters so why change a good thing?

The rooms were comfy and stayed cool with just a fan for the most part.

The restaurant isn't bad at all. It's a little pricey but that was expected since it was a.) at a hotel and b.) right on the beach. However, the food was tasty and the drinks were nice.

The heated pool was also really nice to relax in after being in the salt water all day. It gets windy and a little chilly at night so it was excellent to hang out in and look at the stars.

Overall, great stay for two folks looking for a little R&R.

The place was cute, clean, reasonable, and all the employees we encountered were very friendly and helpful. I was dissappointed that the restaurant didn't have any kid friendly or vegetarian friendly fare as I would have loved to have eaten there (they have a great patio) but, other than that, we were very pleased. I will most likely stay here again and definitely recommend this place to friends and family.

  • Liked — it was small, on the beach and reasonably priced
  • Disliked — initially there was no stopper for the bathtub and the sheets for the fold out bed didn't fit the bed.

I was nervous about booking this place since I had never been to South Padre and didn't know what to expect. The island is one long strip of condos, and The Palms Resort is hidden among them. What a relief to come to this small, well maintained hotel. It was very basic, which is what we expected for the price, but clean and cared for. The cafe on the beach was a major attraction for us, and the food was as good, if not better than most places on the island.. (nothing is worth writing home). We felt lucky to stay at this location and were very pleased with the friendly service of the hotel staff.
If you don't eat at the Cafe at the Palms, venture off the island to dine. There are much better choices in Port Isabel, like Joe's Seafood (it looks like a dive, but the oysters on the half shell can't be beat at $6.50/doz) and The Lost Galleon for the best "fry" around.

We stayed at The Palms during the off-season: between spring break and summer. It was a steal at $80 per night for the king suite. The room looked exactly like the photos on the hotel Web site; it was very clean; the AC worked great; and the little kitchenette was helpful for our family of four (two kids under the age of 5). The pool was even nicer than the photos, and the beach access made this place really worth it.

I would definitely recommend The Palms, with four caveats:

(1) The rooms are pretty small. It worked for us since our kids are so small, but families with older kids would feel pretty cramped, I think. The bathroom is tiny, and there's only a shower, no tub. Not tons of hot water, either, but enough for all of us to take warm showers each day after the beach.

(2) The hotel staff are pretty stingy with the towels, which are standard-issue motel towels anyway. We had our own beach towels with us, so we didn't need the hotel towels for anything other than showering once a day. But when we arrived back from the beach before housekeeping had reached our room one day, I went to the front desk to ask for fresh towels, and they actually made a note of it on some list and told me that when housekeeping came they wouldn't bring us more towels that day.

(3) Housekeeping did a nice job, but they tended to arrive at our room (111) around lunchtime each day. This also happened to be around the time we came back from the beach, so one day I hung the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door so my husband and I could shower and get the kids bathed. We promptly took the sign off the door, had our lunch and left for the afternoon, and when we arrived home after dinner, we discovered that our room had never been cleaned. The front desk explained that we'd had the "Do Not Disturb" sign on the door, so I guess housekeeping never doubled back to check on the rooms they hadn't cleaned. We aren't slobs, but after a day at the beach, there's a fair amount of sand that gets tracked in.

(4) The pillows here are the worst I've ever had at a hotel, hands down. They are so flat that my husband and I couldn't even tell our heads were lying on pillows the first night. We tried stuffing the pillowcases (with the pillows still inside them) with clean beach towels and that worked OK. The rest of the nights we just folded the pillows in half and slept on those.

Despite those caveats, I definitely recommend The Palms.

  • Liked — Great beach access, nice kitchenette, clean room, nice pool
  • Disliked — Stingy with towels, terrible pillows, be careful using "Do Not Disturb" sign

My husband and I were very excited to stay here for our latest trip (February 17 & 18, 2008) after reading many great reviews. It is nice for the price we booked it for ($50/night - off season), but it wasn't amazing like some people stated. The size was nice (3 rooms - the only door is on the shower/toilet room) and it looked very neat and tidy.

Room #214 (2nd level, NE corner)

Pros:
Location - nice short walk onto the beach!
Price - $50/night (off season)
View
Service - the front person suggested terrific restaurants - Cap't Roy's - WONDERFUL place!
Nicely decorated
Bath & Body Works toiletries (shampoo, conditioner, & lotion)
Restaurant in hotel - close & very good!

Cons:
Air conditioner is not located in the bedroom - it's in the kitchenette (around a wall)
Bed - not very comfortable (felt & sounded like an air matress) & very loud just putting suitcases on it
Knob on the closet wouldn't stay on
No hair dryer
Bathroom sink - very small space & not flush with walls (my contacts fell inbetween the wall and the vanity)
TV was't great (green around the edges)
Shower - no ledge in shower to put shampoo & soap
Shower - the control for the temperature & pressure didn't work - the water would only get luke warm
Shower & bathroom sink - very little pressure
Parking - VERY small lot (not condusive for larger vehicles) & not many spaces

Thanks for your feedback. We're working on upgrading the rooms, but based on your comments about the beds, we have now replaced all the box springs (which was the source of the noise you heard). We have also ordered all new mattresses, which will be deivered in July 2008. Thanks for letting us know!

Good for what it is. Comfortable room right on the beach (though orientation of the building prevents beach view). Cafe / bar right on site. Heated pool is small, but big enough. Clean, well run place with no frills. Well priced. We were very satisfied though not overwhelmed.

World's worst bartender at the Cafe. "Roberto". Had to beg for a beer and he was given over to practical jokes and singing songs. When ordering a drink he would say "we're out". Mildly amusing the first time. The tenth time wore very thin. His impromptu karaoke included "Kung Fu Fighting" and the Freecreditreport.com jingle. Will probably be fired by the time you get there though so the coast should be clear.

Overall, very good, but there's some room for improvement.
