La Quinta Inn & Suites South Padre Island

Excellent property location as it is right on the gulf at the north section of south padre island.. Checked in on Sunday at 4:30pm and it was a madhouse. Checking out wasn't much better though there wasn't a line, per say, of people. Just a lot of vehicles all loading up at the same time. At check-in, we waited on, and found ourselves at the back of a very long line of people. I must state that I have never had to wait for more than a few minutes to check-in anywhere at anytime. I was informed that Sunday's are generally quite busy as people are not only checking in but also checking out. Problem is that the posted checkout time is 11am. There were three staffers checking people in but it was a very slow go. Finally got to our room on the north side facing the Hilton Garden Inn, which is owned by the same gentleman who owns the La Quinta. Must be nice. Great gulf view even from the second floor. There are four floors altogether. North side at least halfway towards the gulf, or pool side, offer the best views. Gulf view is obstructed by the Hilton if one is less than half way towards beach. We were in room 219. Avoid the south side as views are obstructed unless you're on upper floors. Rooms decent size and bedding (2 queens) was quite comfortable. Not many hotels in South padre even offer two queens. Very small balconies but at least every room has one. TV lacked hi def. Small pool but at least it's directly in front of gulf. Elevators were slow going since the place was busy so we just used the stairs quite often. Hence the second floor choice. Hotel was very clean and staff helpful. However, after getting beaten up by the surf on two occasions, we all decided to take a rest at mid-day and our room had not been attended to yet. We found that particularly aggravating and went two days with just a change of towels. The poolside/beachside restaurant/bar offers a full bar and the food, albeit with limited options, was actually quite good. Great hamburgers. Guests over 21 get one free drink per day per room and also allow for a $2 deduction on any more premium drinks. Their pina coladas were excellent and the staff in the restaurant/bar was very friendly and helpful. The free hot breakfast, offered on the 4th floor, offered the usual fare if not scaled down a bit. Candidly, for much of our stay, it was almost like having your own private beach. Parking lot is very long and skinny. Many hundreds of feet, with slanted parking spots as well as parallel parking and it's not unusual to have to walk quite a ways to get to your vehicle. The turning radius and general layout of the parking area at lobby could have been thought out much better. This facility allows pets as no additional charge. We saw dogs ranging in size from a pound to well over 80. We heard one couple complain about a small dog barking for hours but we never witnessed anything of the same. Our teenage boys were 16 and 18 respectively and while one could presume there would be other guests of a similar age group, we did not see one girl or boy that age during our entire stay. Mostly younger teens 13, 14. We did find that a little odd. On another note, and this is by no means meant to be a negative in any way, we couldn't help but ascertain that percentage of hispanics at this facility was over 90% while this percentage changed to around 10% at the Hilton. Overall, a reasonably good choice at a reasonable price with great views and direct access to a beautiful beach.

Room Tip: North side at least half-way towards gulf. Even 2nd floor offers great gulf views. Pool side is ni...

I don't know what has happened to this place. It was our preferred hotel and we had not been there in 2 years. We arrived on 8/9/12 and it is a dump. The bathroom had strings of hair in tub and sink. The sink would not drain properly. During breakfast not one table was clean and when we asked the staff to clean a table, they were not happy about it. Oh, and when my husband went to use the bathroom, well they stored the popcorn machine in men's bathroom. It was very late when we got to room so we had no other choice but 2 stay with two little ones in tow, but we left early next day and this will be our very last stay there and we will NOT recommend it.

Too many pets; Elevators too slow; Room phone did not work; Cover on A/C fell off in the middle of the night; First room assigned on the 3rd floor had a leak in the ceiling with water dripping on the bed; Very slow internet access; Staff always took priority on the elevators with carts; Fan in bath room always came on when light was turned on and made noise;

Room Tip: Do not stay in a room on the first floor, too much traffic.

Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else!
Dirty....we had one small bar of soap for five people! No glasses...Three towels...
When I called to tell them, they were "snappy" and told me I would have to bring my
towels down to exchange them. I picked up some styrofoam cups in the lobby. The electrical
outlets did not work...We paid over $800.00 for one night. We decided to cut our
losses and leave early rather than stay another night in the dirty old room.

Room Tip: Beautiful hotel just next door.

Great Location, right on the beach, plenty of seating on the decks, patio areas. Free continental breakfast was very good, consisted of bagels, toast, cereal fruit, juices, waffles, etc. but included eggs, beans, migas, breakfast taco fixings, everyday there was some type of tex-mex breakfast items served as well, we were very surprised and very happy because the food was very good. The people were very nice and helpful, the beach bar drinks were too expensive, however, their food was good, we had some nachos and they were excellent, homemade ingredients down to the tortilla chips...The hotel is a little older and i think it could use another renovation. The biggest issue i had was that my daughter & her friends like to go between swimming in the beach and the pool, however, this hotel has a tiny-very small pool and since lot's of families stay here with children there were times when it was so packed that we didn't even get in because there was not enough room, they definitely need to renovate the pool and make a bigger one, also the water in the pool did not look very clean probably because too many people were in it, so we opted just to do beach...The rates for this hotel are very high in my opinion for what you receive, i probably would stay somewhere else next time.
