“Wow, really small and don't plan on spending all day”

Schlitterbahn Beach Resort
Reviewed 29 June 2014

One of 3 things to do on the island with kids. The others are the gravity go kart and the beach. The kids were done about 3 hours into the park. It wasn't even busy and it was kinda boring. The lazy river was the best part :/
Padre is really for couples that want to get away and college drinkers...'bout it.
Get your kids some boogie boards and take em to the beach. They will like that better and it will be a LOT cheaper. I think it was $48 and we spent a few hours...omg what a rip!

Schlitterbahn is very good at making water parks, but hotels...not so much. Before you go, you should know what you're getting into. The park itself is nice and the rides are fun. The best part about it is the water is warm enough to stay in for hours, and not freeze you or your kids.

But the hotel. It serves a purpose, but it's not very nice. This is a 2.5-3 star hotel, at best. Think of a La Quinta quality. We stayed there because we have 3 kids who were running around soaking wet after being in the water park all day, and for that, the hotel is convenient. The location is also nice, right on the beach, which is a short walk down the boardwalk.

But the accommodations are not fancy or quality. The first room we got smelled like mustard. Seriously, like a factory that makes mustard. We went back to the front desk and got another room which smelled normal. We had a double room with two beds. They were full size beds, not queen. The view overlooked part of the water park. There are only two VERY slow elevators, so beware. Front desk staff was borderline mentally unfit. In fact, staff around the park was mostly young kids who really should not be in the hospitality business. Don't waste your time asking them for help or questions. Just go right to a manager, if you can find one.

Food at this place was terrible and incredibly overpriced. When you're soaking wet, you have few options, so stick to fried food - it's harder to mess up. Any time you can, go out to eat and save money on nicer meals. Pier 19 directly across the street is a great place for views and a good food, reasonable prices.

One last thing. The hotel is not attached to the main water park. When we first arrived to check in, our GPS steered us to the main entrance of the water park. We called the hotel when we couldn't find it. Signage is non-existent. The driveway to the hotel is actually hidden a few hundred feet before the water park entrance. It is tucked away behind one of those big souvenir shops. You'll see a little sign on the driveway.

Overall, if your family enjoys water parks, this is a decent family getaway near the beach. But you might think about just visiting the water park and finding another place to stay.

Have been to the original Schlitterbahn in New Braunfels many times so wanted to try South Padre. There are not as many rides of course, but all very good. We liked staying on the resort. Rooms were nice, compare it to a normal hotel room. There is nice bar and grill out on the beach side. Serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Ate at the main restaurant for lunch. I would recommend sitting out side. You can see the beach and ocean, and watch the boogie board ride right below. Lunch was good. We liked the fact to get to enter most of the rides you have to be in the lazy river. All in all it was a good trip. We stayed Friday - Sunday. Beware that they charge you a resort fee every day that includes your ticket to get into the waterpark. We checked out early Sunday and didn't feel like we should have to pay it since we left early and did not go to waterpark that day. They said it was policy, and that we had to pay it no matter what.

A bit costly, but had descent rides. Something to do for the day. Lockers for storage are not really big enough unless you want to pay more for a bigger locker, but they were full so it didn't really matter. I guess the thing to do is take your own cooler chest full of drink and food since they didn't mind people from bringing them in to cut cost.

Had a great time and good food. The atmosphere was great as well. We will definitely be back as the cost was not expensive.
