Gringo's offers one of the most varied selections of Tex-Mex food in this area. You can get the regular assortments of tacos, tamales, fajitas, and enchiladas, plus some interesting variations on shrimp. For starters our party ordered four different appetizers (starters on the menu.) We tried the queso dip, cantina nachos, quesadillas, and Southwest egg rolls. All of the appetizers were tasty and after sampling some of each we all decided the Southwest egg rolls were the best. They are chicken tenders with corn, spinach, black beans, and bell peppers in a crisp shell (they called in wok and roll.) Good combination of flavors and it was served with a delicious sauce full of cilantro and peppers in a ranch dressing base for dipping.
As I mentioned in the first paragraph there are a lot of items to choose from on the menu which made selection difficult as each entrée sounded interesting. I decided to play it safe and ordered a combination plate called the Presidente. I received a huge platter nicely presented with enough food on it for three people. Cheese enchiladas, chalupa, crispy taco, queso dip, and fresh guacamole were among the items on the platter along with Mexican rice and your choice of beans. I normally do not like refried beans so was pleased to see you could choose from several different styles including my favorite vegetarian black beans. After the large appetizers, the entrée was not fully appreciated as we weren't any longer very hungry. Regardless, the hot food was served hot, and the cold food thoughtfully served on a cold platter. Nice to have guacamole served cool on a bed of crisp lettuce. Very tasty with a rich creamy texture.
One of my table mates also tried one of the platters and the other two had a combination fajita platter for two. Everyone said the food was good and we all took home enough for lunch the next day.
None of us tried any of the margaritas on the menu, but I did notice that unless it was happy hour your beverage was priced almost as much as some entrees. Most of these were advertised as specialty drinks and were priced from $8-$9. The happy hour margaritas were priced at $4.99. There were also a limited selection of specialty beers and a couple of beers offered on draft.
Dessert wasn't something any of us wanted but as we left there was a soft cream ice cream dispenser available at no charge. All in all this was a pleasant dining experience, not the best Tex-Mex I've ever eaten but anything that was lacking was made up for in the nice presentation of the food.
The service was OK, but the servers did seem to be rushed and it was difficult to get a server to return to the table once the food was delivered. I want to return in the near future and try one of the shrimp dishes, the menu description sounded delicious and the aromas from the other diners made you look over to see what they were eating. Don't expect a quiet romantic atmosphere, this place is busy and loud but if you overlook the lack of ambience you'll enjoy the food.
