“Great opportunity for family bonding”
Reviewed 9 March 2013

Our family of five had the best time vacationing in these cabins! We stayed over New Years and it was cold so the boys enjoyed visiting the local general store and buying wood for the fireplace! They got such a kick out of the bunk beds and we watched movies and made our own pizzas! What a great relaxing time without the disruption of cell phones, xbox and tv! Spent wonderful quality time together! We cannot wait to go back!

Room Tip: Stock up on groceries before arriving to vanderpool. General store has limited items for sale.

My family and I stayed in the Red Rooster cabin at the Lodges the week of June 17th. We had a wonderful time! The cabins are very homey with a lot of attention to details. The beds are comfortable with lots of pillows and blankets, books and old VCR tapes are in the cabin, the kitchen has a coffee maker & microwave, pretty much everything you need to feel right at home. Our favorite thing about the cabin is the back porch! There are several cushioned chairs where you can sit and watch the birds. Be sure to fill up the bird feeder with the seeds from the kitchen. There is a huge glass jar of seeds for your use. Because there are so few cabins, you feel like you are the only ones there even when the other cabins are occupied. Also, my husband and son took several naps in the hammock.
Breakfast is part of the package and is absolutely delicious. The blueberry muffins are definitely the best I've ever had anywhere!
This was our second time staying at the Lodges, and we can't wait to come back again!

My sisters and I went for our annual girl trip. We loved it! It was a tad challenging to find at night as there are no lights on street of entrance. Other an that, we loved it. Breakfast came promptly every morning and was delicious! Freshly squeezed OJ was perfect! Inside of the red rooster cabin was fine for 4 people. We had plenty of room, beds and such! We enjoyed back porch for morning talks with coffee. Property dog Remy, came by and said hi. He was very nice and trained dog.
Activities were abundant. We went to state park, shopped in Leakey, ate at Laurel Tree in Utopia(a must go to), and stopped and shopped again in Bandera on our way home. There are few restaurants, but are good for the ones that are there. If your looking for a low key getaway from city life, I recommend. We loved this place!

If you wan't to be away from the rat race of city life, this is the place for you. The cabins are clean and comfortable. The view is gorgeous. Perhaps because of the nearness to RR 337, there wasn't much sign of wildlife. Bring your own food.... you are in the middle of nowhere.

I found the experience enjoyable and will return.

Came from Fort worth to stay here in mid October. We stayed in the Sweetheart cabin(Solomons Den). Word of caution from the start..Make sure to buy groceries and maybe a couple of magazines BEFORE getting here, as the nearest store is pretty far, but the owner did warn us. Other than that, we had the most relaxing, peaceful and romantic get away EVER! After a day of exploring Lost Maples Park, we ventured off to find a grocery store and fell in love with the mountains and spectacular views. Came back to the cabin and cooked steaks on the outside grill and enjoyed the beautiful evening. Woke the next morning to tastiest breakfast made by Jeralyn, that was an awesome sausage cream cheese roll with sides of homemade pastries and fresh fruit. I have since recreated the sausage roll! We spent the early day exploring the area and ate lunch and came back to the cabin. I laid in the hammock out under the trees with a magazine and afghan and was soon asleep! I left there being the most relaxed I have ever been in my life! We will definately come back one day! Even my husband is still talking about the place and it has been a few years ago when we went.

Room Tip: If you want a shower, ask which cabins have showers as some only have baths. The Sweetheart(Solomons...

Let me first say that we really enjoyed our stay at the Lodges at Lost Maples. These are 5 cute individual cabins partly clad in wood with front and back porches, set alongside a very quiet dirt road and surrounded by trees. The cabins are sufficiently far apart from each other that each feels very private. They are all very tastefully and individually decorated with antique furniture and rugs. Our cabin, Red Rooster House, consisted of one large room with a fully equipped kitchen at one end, an eating area, a living room area with a fireplace, a sleeping alcove with a king-size bed, and 2 built-in very comfortable bunk beds, plus a bathroom. We arrived at 3pm on a hot and sticky day and found that the AC was not working. This is where it gets problematic. There is no office and no staff on the premises. No indication as to whether there is anyone nearby who can help. There is no cell phone coverage in the area. So to get in touch with the manager, you need to drive a few miles up the hills to find a spot where your phone works (forget it if you have a Sprint phone, but AT&T works sometimes). We had to leave a message on their answerphone. It took a few hours for the manager to turn up. She was not able to get the AC going, so she told us she would send her husband to take a look. Fortunately, he was able to fix it. Now for the breakfast: it is set for 9am every morning (rather late for those who want to beat the heat of the day on a hike) and they drive a plate of warm goodies to your door in their pickup truck. Things like warm muffins, sausage roll, apple scones, banana bread etc., and also some fresh fruit and orange juice. Because the plate is covered with cling wrap, the steam from the warm baked goods settles back on them, making them somewhat soggy. Also, there is very little flexibility on the time. Personally, I think they should dispense with the breakfast, or just supply the ingredients the night before (such as eggs, bacon, toast, fruit, muffins, whatever) since there is a fully equipped kitchen in every cabin and everyone can then do as much or as little cooking with it as they want. Or give guests a choice of one or the other. Just a thought! One more thing: the cabins are located in a valley, so the photograph on the website of far-reaching mountain views is slightly misleading. You do get those views if you drive up to the top of the surrounding hills... So all in all, a very pleasant stay, but some inherent problems could do with being addressed. In particular, I do think that guests should be able to get hold of a person in charge much more easily and quickly.

We drove 330 miles looking forward to our two days mini vacation. Let me start by telling you that there are no wild life of anything. The place is not on a mountain and it is within 100 feet of the major road. We were promised breakfast every morning at 9, no one came. We did not have enough towels and there is no shower in the cabin only a bath tub that you need buckets to take a bath.
No one checked on us to make sure everything was O.K. I do not understand how can anyone give them a good review except if they were family members and friends.

happy2bTexas, Manager at The Lodges at Lost Maples, responded to this review, 29 March 2012
The Lodges at Lost Maples are located in a rural area of the Texas Hill County. They are situated along a county road that runs through private property, and it is by no means a major road. The only roads in this area for at least 11 miles are two-lane winding country roads. As indicated in the review The Lodges are not on a mountain top and do not claim to be. They are located in a valley and offer a view of the mountains. On occasion we do provide the breakfast in the cabin ahead of time, as we did with this guest. It allows them the flexibility to leave earlier than 9 a.m. if they would like to get an early start, especially during busy holidays when the nearby state parks fill up and close their gates to additional entrants as early as 11 a.m. It also allows them to sleep in if they desire. We appreciate the opportunity to reflect on our practices and determine what is best for future guests. The Lodges does strongly suggest that anyone making a reservation read the description of the cabin and the list of amenities before choosing a cabin as some of them offer a shower only, two only have a bathtub and one has both. This information is provided to prospective guests during the reservation process.
