We took a road trip to Waco to see the Cameron Park Zoo and Dr. Pepper Museum over spring break. We went to the Zoo less than an hour after it opened and the DPM in the afternoon. It was a good thing we did the zoo early because it got hot by the afternoon and the parking lot filled up. People were waiting for us to pull out of our parking spot.
This zoo only takes about 2 1/2 hours to leisurely walk through. Because it is laid out in a loop, you never have to double back or worry about missing exhibits. Because they participate in the national zoo membership program, it cost us nothing to get in. That left us more money to buy things at their shop for the kids!
The animals appear to be well taken care of and the park is spotless. If you go early in the day, it isn't at all crowded, either.
I call it a midsized zoo because large zoos take upwards of 4 hours or more and small zoos take only an hour or so. It is just about right sized for a family. Much shorter and you feel ripped off, much longer and you become exhausted.
If you want to picnic lunch afterward, turn right out of the parking lot entrance and drive straight down 4th St/Ave until you enter Cameron Park proper. There are many meandering roads and picnic pavilions under trees to stop at and eat lunch. They even have Frisbee golf if you want to play. Just bring your own Frisbee!
