We spent a great day at Brian Head Resort going up on the ski lift (it was out of season), hiking and mountain biking on the mountain.

“Great value for families and novices”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 April 2013

Had never heard of BH until I googled 'Utah ski resorts' after discovering how expen siveaccommodation, lessons and lift tickets are at high profile resorts near Salt Lake City. Prices at BH are a third to half of those resorts.

Staff very obliging, friendly and competent. Two mountains (linked by shuttle or chair lifts) - one for beginners and one for intermediates. Little night life and few expert runs was a plus for us - it was quiet and peaceful and you didn't feel like a fool when you fell over! By end of 3 days lessons my 7yo twins and wife who were virtually first timers could ski with me on beginners mountain. This was a real gift we will remember all our lives. We were there first week of April - great snow (several inches fell as we arrived - more fell after we left), mild temperatures and despite being school vacation for most US schools, we never waited more than 2 minutes for a ski lift!

Apart from the resort itself, we had excellent service from Brian Head Vacation Rentals who recommended a great 2br 2 bath condo 10' from the slope for just $140 pn. You can't book a motel room requiring a shuttle bus to the lifts in any other ski resort I know of for that price!

We cannot recommend this place highly enough for families with kids who are beginners or intermediate standard.

Only possible negative is the base altitude of 9,400' - which might cause minor altitude sickness (like slight headache) but it is also a positive as it ensures a longer ski season.

For those visiting from outside the region it is an easy 3.5 hr drive from Vegas (7 hrs from LA) - if like us you come from o/s (Australia) - rent a 4wd (chains required to be carried if you don't have 4wd - not that we needed them on well maintained road). We got a Jeep from Dollar at LAX for little more than a large 2wd sedan which saves hassle with chains which some car rental companies will not cover you for insurance if you use them. The cost of a rental for almost a week was still less than paying shuttle charge from airport to resort and return for family of 4. It also allows you to pick up supplies (Cedar City just 40 mins away from BH has Walmart etc) and take a couple of drives to beautiful spots nearby like Cedar Breaks and Zion National Park.

“spring skiing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 March 2013

Kids liked the Navajo lift (#4) with the tunnel near the condos, and the Paradise trail. Giant Step was more my speed. Conditions were uncrowded and skiing great.

While waiting in line to pay for lift tickets, I heard someone in front mention that Utah Groupon has excellent discounts for Brian Head (about half price), but I missed it.

“Great Skiing - Like your own resort”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 March 2013

Spent 3 days fantastic skiing here midweek in early March 2013. The greatest attraction is the lack of crowds and lift lines. We felt like we owned the resort, there were so few people around at times.

We chose Brian Head due to it's proximity to Las Vegas. It's a comfortable 4 hour drive. The lift ticket prices are a steal as well. Everyone we met was friendly and helpful. The terrain is mainly beginner and intermediate, which was plenty challenging for those of us who hadn't skied for a few years. There are some more challenging runs for the dare devils. The views from the top are spectacular.

The resort is the highest in Utah, so we did feel the altitude, but nothing too serious. The second day was a lot better.

The only negatives we found were the food in the shops was pretty ordinary and expensive, but it is a ski resort. Also, we stayed on snow in one of the hotels, and found the resort at night to be very quiet. There are also very few restaurants other than the expensive hotel ones. The pizza place being the standout which was ok. I think next time we go to Brian Head, we would get a condo and bring in our own supplies, or stay in Cedar City and make the daily drive up the mountain.

All in all, we really enjoyed our ski holiday at Brian Head, and look forward to visiting it again when next able to.
