We wanted to sleep close to Bryce Canyon NP, and the Grand Staircase Hotel fit the bill. The Grand Staircase is an enormous geological formation of layers of sedimentary rock that stretches from Bryce Canyon to the Grand Canyon, so grand does not refer to the hotel. It’s a hotel, but so much more – gas station, convenience store and the pivot of the local community. When we drove up, the scene reminded me of “No Country for Old Men”, but it turned out to be much more pleasant. The check-in is the check-out for the convenience store, and time moves much slower here. Our room, which was quite comfortable and had a good bed, was several doors down from the store entrance. We sat on a bench outside our front door and drank a beer while the local kittens tried to crawl up our pants legs. It was very bucolic. Our room was very quiet, we slept really well, and we had a new experience at breakfast. We have never eaten a breakfast that consist entirely of multiple rounds of toast. You can purchase other stuff to eat at the store, which has booths for eating, but we passed. You are thinking that I am making fun of this hotel, but, to the contrary, I would stay here again in a heartbeat because I like places that do not fit into our overly homogenized world. It reminded me of staying in tourist courts back in the 1950s when I was a child.

We stayed at the Grand Staircase Inn while driving from Bryce Canyon to Capitol Reef. I was a little wary of the place when we arrived, but I was shocked when we saw our room. The rooms are huge! It was also very clean and beds were comfortable. There is a convenience store below the rooms. It was nice to stock up on some snacks and grab some ice cream. Breakfast in the morning was minimal (toast, yogurt, and coffee), but it was better than nothing. Staff members were very friendly during our stay.

This charming town has a hotel that is lacking in friendliness, cleanliness and a much needed update! Upon arrival we were told that their office would be closed on Sunday from 10 am - 2 pm "for church'. We found this to be unprofessional and if you are in the hotel business- hire someone to run your front office when you're away. The hotel was in much need of an update- it felt like we were back in the 50's. The food was less than mediocre and most of the staff acted like we were a burden.
I would find someplace closer, more friendly, cleaner and open during business hours.

We stayed here while visiting Bryce Canyon. I was pleasantly surprised to find a jacuzzi tub in our room. It was a welcome site after a long day of hiking & driving. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable and the staff were friendly. No complaints here. If you have problems going up stairs, make sure you request a ground floor room.
