“GREAT HOME BASE FOR EXPLORING THE ESCALANTE & CAPITAL REEF”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 October 2013

This is a fresh, modern, well-designed base from which to explore the glories of the Escalante region. All the comforts of home - and then some - have been thoughtfully provided and are in excellent working order: sub-zero fridge, DW, gas grill, W/D, excellent shower facility, comfortable beds and furnishings, surprisingly good internet access for the remoteness of the location, very ample storage space. The owners are welcoming, a great source of useful tips about hikes and drives in the area, and remarkably unobtrusive despite living right next door. In a residential section of Escalante, but right on the edge of it, so the front views are directly into the southern national monument area and 50-Mile Bench, with the Milky Way stretching for aeons above. Ample space for two couples or a small family, but, as others have noted, beware the excellent shower facility will have to be shared, as there's only one.

Thanks to the hosts for a perfect location to all the fun in the Grand Staircase region. We had such a good time in the area that we want to go back soon. We enjoyed lazy mornings and sitting out on the patio in the evening with the Milky Way above us - the night sky is amazing. We certainly enjoyed the architecture of the home...it has everything you need. Ricki was kind to give us some hiking tips, where to fish, and a nice backroad drive heading north to go back home. This is the place to stay in Escalante!

Great access to hikes in the Grand Staircase region. Our hosts were knowledgeable about the roads, hikes, flora and fauna of the area. One mile walk or ride into town with a couple of fun restaurants and a couple of full service outfitters. The house is luxurious, with a glamerous new kitchen design, comfortables beds and a beautiful view from every room. The house is cool and designed for the desert.

Room Tip: you can't beat the house or the location.

This was my first time staying at La Luz and the second for my wife and sister-in-law.

I love the architecture which utilizes passive solar heating/cooling techniques with an open kitchen/living/dining floor plan.

One of our favorite activities at the house was sitting on the patio at night after a day of adventure and looking at all the stars. This area of southern Utah has some of the least amount of light pollution in the country.

This house is perfect for two couples or a family. The only downside if you're two couples is that the there is only one shower, which is in the master bedroom, but the shower is fantastic.

I would definitely recommend this place to all my friends.

This is to be the cream of the crop in the dessert for rentals. Fine architecture and the most well stocked kitchen I have ever come across (apart from my own!!). Try to arrive in the daylight as it can be tricky to find, but once found you will be delighted. Enjoy the isolation and the feeling of being in the dessert while being close to the small township.

The owners live next door and are available for tips on exploring this exciting area. We stayed for 3 nights but we still have much to see. A week would NOT be too long.

The house is warm and spacious with all the facilities you will need. ENJOY!

Room Tip: The ground floor bedroom has a full ensuite bathroom

We expected a decent house to use for a base for touring all the national parks/monuments in Utah. What we got was absolutely incredible - beautiful open spaces, architectural detailing, comfortable furniture, amazingly upscale appliances. It was also very clean and well-maintained. And exceptionally quiet, just at the edge of town.

The owners were on vacation when we arrived but had arranged coverage for questions, etc. When the owners got home, they quickly touched base to see if we had any questions/concerns. As others have noted, Ricki was a fount of knowledge about what to see and do.

My one disappointment was not being able to cook more in the gourmet kitchen and eat on the lovely patio. While the cabinets were amply supplied with dishes, condiments, pots and pans, a well-stocked grocery store was many miles away.

My husband, brother, sister-in-law and I stayed six glorious days at La Luz and loved every moment ... especially the glorious sunrises. Ricki and Sandy, the owners, are next door but don't intrude. I urge you, however, to take the initiative and talk with Ricki. He's a photographer and (when asked) will give you wonderful advice on places to go. My husband and brother are both photographers and had a wonderful time learning about out of the way stops that we might never have found on our own.
