The room was comfortable and clean. We had good wi-fi service. We were given coupons for Stan's Burger Shack for a discount for dinner and for a complimentary breakfast in the morning. We would stay here again if we were in the area.

Cabin rooms were clean, second queen bed a plus. Easy walk to restaurant at the gas station next door. Plenty of parking. Vouchers for breakfast are a nice touch. Took a long time for hot water to reach the cabins closest to the street (farthest from the water heater, presumably). Nice to have chairs in front of the rooms.

Room Tip: Not much traffic on the street, so cabins close to it shouldn't be noisy, but read note about ho...

We had reservations for a cabin at the Whispering Sands, but as we entered the tiny town of Hanksville, we drove right by, thinking that this barren-looking motel couldn't possibly be where we were staying. Thirty seconds later, having reached the other end of town, we turned around, looked more carefully at the sign, and -- with trepidation -- pulled into the large, featureless parking lot. Luckily, it was way uphill from there, with friendly service, a large, comfortable room offering free WiFi, a small refrigerator, and a microwave. We also got free Continental breakfasts at Stan's Burger Shak next door and a discount to eat other meals at Stan's as well. There's not much happening in town, but Hanksville is a good way station for people heading to or from Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, or -- like us -- traveling between Canyonlands and Capitol Reef National Parks. We spent two pleasant nights at the Whispering Sands, during which we visited the enchanting Goblin Valley and the wildly gorgeous Little Wild Horse Canyon. For city folk like us, Saturday night at Stan's Burger Shak was a treat: good, reasonably priced food; huge, thick shakes; and a lively, welcoming atmosphere.

Room Tip: The 2-story motel section looked fine, but I'd opt for one of the cabins. They're not too pr...

I agree with the comments from the better reviews. It IS a good place to stay. I stayed two nights, before and after some nearby canyon hikes. It was clean and quiet for a good night's sleep and the staff was nice and helpful. There is a (rocky) walkway -- so you don't have to walk the highway -- to the Chevron station next door with Stan's Burger Shack that has an impressive burger and milkshake menu (including fish and chips) and where you also go for an acceptable continental breakfast. It is open until 10pm, a good thing to know when arriving late.

Room Tip: I stayed in Room 0, a "cabin" room as opposed to one in the main (two story) building. Th...

We had a really great time at the Whispering Sands. When staying there you get a discount at the local burger place just around the corner. Real cowboys wandering in with hats and spurs and the lot. Fascinating for Europeans. The area is beautifully deserted if you like that sort of thing and I do. Beautiful table mountains in three colours. I would definitely come to Hanksville and the Whispering Sands again.

We made reservations for a Friday and Saturday night. When we got there, the reservations had actually been made for Saturday and Sunday night. They were aware they had made the mistake, but they had no rooms available when we arrived Friday afternoon. They paid for our dinner at the restaurant next door, and found us a room somewhere else and paid for that (closest room available was 18 miles away). We returned and stayed Saturday night. The Whispering Sands is a good choice when enjoying the out-of-doors in the area.

Room Tip: There is a row of rooms that look like they were each built in a shed. Odd from the outside, but ju...
