Kanarra Creek is a beautiful canyon located north of the Kolob section of Zion National Park. Since 5/1/2018, you need to purchase a permit to hike here. It can be purchased for $8 per person online at kanarrafalls.com or at the Kanarra Falls trailhead. The prefer credit cards but do not accept American Express. The permit includes parking at both the Town and Sweet Spot parking lots. The hike is less than 4 miles long, and it includes straightforward walking on a path, wading in the river, and navigating through a slot canyon. Its most photographed feature is Kanarraville Falls, a 15-foot high rock-jam waterfall with a ladder placed next to it. Recommend wearing water shoes for this hike.

We walked all the way to the waterfalls with 2 couples (all of us being 55+) and had a great time. The walk once you reach the creek is especially interesting. Winding in and out of the water for at least a mile or so. The water was cool and felt refreshing. We each used a hiking pole which helped with the uneven surface of the creek. Once we arrived at the slot canyon we were blown away at the uniqueness and beauty of it. There were no crowds (unlike "the Narrows" at Zion). Overall it was a great day. Can't say for sure how far the walk was for sure as we have seen several different distances posted.. My husband's iPhone said we walked around 5 miles round-trip.

The hike is "easy" once you reach the cool refreshing river. But there is nothing "easy" about the initial dusty, steep dirt incline in the scorching hot sun, especially if you have young kids in tow. We had 3 kids (ages 14, 12, 10) who were hating life during the first part. For some reason we anticipated (falsely) that the river would be quickly reached. Not so. Perhaps because we got off to a late start departing from Vegas, arrived around noon, and did not know that Utah was 1 hour ahead. It was 100+ degrees by then. We saw other parents scolding their pouting children along the way. Once you hit the river, you have a choice of walking in the river itself (ankle deep only this time of year), navigating over the pebbly bottom, or walking on a parallel dirt path (faster). Occasionally we were not sure where the trail went, but you just look for the wet footprints of the people before you. There were adorable little mini waterfalls along the way. I regret not wearing my swimsuit because later there were larger waterfalls that would have been refreshing to dip in. We wore cheap Walmart water shoes that did the trick. Walking stick not really necessary. We've done the Narrows before, and this would be a good scaled-down practice run before the Narrows. This is much more quaint, less polluted, less populated, but of course not as challenging. Be prepared to wait in line at the ladders going both directions. The 2nd ladder was a little wobbly. Kids loved the rock slide.

Relatively few people while we were there last week. The ladders are in good shape. The canyons are beautiful. Had 15, 13 & 10 year old along with us. All navigated the ladders easily.

Beautiful easy hike for family. With the upper falls about 5miles total hike. Best time to go early morning, no crowds and enjoy photographing the falls. Will go again. Now need permit to hike, $8.00per person included parking.
