“Spectacular...but not for the faint of heart!”

Guardsman Pass Scenic Backway
Ranked #2 of 97 things to do in Park City
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 17 September 2013

We drove the winding back way to Park City from Salt Lake City through Big Cottonwood Canyon. Lots of climbers out on the steep rock cliffs as we wound our way up to Guardsmen Pass. Be sure to stop at the top and gaze down into the valley and across the mountains you have just come through. A few aspens are already golden against a sea of dark green. This picturesque drive is not for the faint of heart--no guard rails and the road is narrow.

We hiked on the Wasatch crest trail - which is also a bike trail. Everyone was enjoying the trail and the views were immense.

Very pretty ride with great scenery and reasonably safe two lane road. Not really a shortcut in time from Midway to Park City but you will have a ride to remember.

Drive this route (when it is open) and be sure you have enough time to enjoy the scenic views and pull-off areas. Let those locals behind you pass by and take a lazy drive. We saw a moose with her calf along the way and stopped for pictures. We were the only car stopped and a police vehicle stopped and checked to see if we were ok - we told him about the moose and off he went. The pass is routinely monitored by rangers and police. Drive to Silver Lake and take the 1 mile walk (much is boardwalk decking). We saw a male moose eating near the lake. Switch drivers on the return trip. The actual drive is less than an hour, (two hours round trip from Park City) but you will want to take your time. Enjoy

We have visited Park City many times but never knew of this. We found it by accident and took the climb up. It was very beautiful. Once you go over the top of the mountain the road splits and you can go into Heber or down Big Cottonwood Canyon to Salt Lake City. Another couple weeks and the leaves would be changing and it has to be the most spectacular drive!!
