This place is what ski/snowboard lodges are suppose to be! It felt as if I was in Europe somewhere. The snow was deep, the rooms cheap and clean, the owners were friendly and at your service! I would return to this place anyday. I actually have reservations for this winter. Skiing is becoming so expensive that it makes it possible for me only with places to stay that are affordable. Keep it up Chateau Apres!

Chateau Apres is a lodge without pretensions. But it's a lodge that gets the job done, you meet some good people and the staff are 'no frills' but honest and welcoming. For about $US30 a night you can stay in the very basic male and female dorms (even book at short notice) including continental style breakfast. There are more elaborate private rooms upstairs, considerably more affordable than the competition. The cute mock-Bavarian lodge is extremely well positioned (close to a lift) and a short walk to everything. Boss Ed and assistant Jason are great guys, non-intrusive and can point you to the easiest ways to get to the other nearby resorts (Snowbird, Alta, Solitude, Brighton, Sundance etc). Plain but cosy, affordable and fun. What else do you need? Cheap lift tickets ($5-$8 off, for Park City and most of the other area resorts) are available at the nearby Park City Ski and Golf shop, 3 minutes walk away.

I stayed here for a week during the 2002 Winter Olympics. It's not a fancy place but then neither do they claim to be such. I think their website describes them as a "accomodations for a sensible price." That's about right. They offer dormatory style lodging on the first floor, so the whole place sort of has that hostel type (college years) environment. Note; their were some strange characters staying in the dorms who seemed to go off (to work?) early every morning in a public van.

The real issue I have with the lodge and its management is that they failed to warn me that they have a very limited amount of parking spaces. They have roughly 15 spaces for about 32 rooms. So not everyone is guranteed a parking space! I wished they had told me this at the time of my booking. Otherwise I would have chosen a different place.

City street parking was not an option while I was there, especially during the week of the Olympics, because the town was enforcing its "no parking" policy by towing cars. During most of the days the parking issue was not a problem because guests would come and go. The real problem and most of my worries occurred at night. Every night that I returned to the lodge was a gamble. Some nights I was lucky to get a parking space, and other nights I was not so lucky. In the not-so-lucky cases I would have to sometimes double park or park in front of their dumpster. Even the double parking was very limited. So every night I would make it point to return to the lodge early so as to better my chances of securing a parking space. I would have preferred to stayed out later in Salt Lake City, if it were not for their unfortunate parking situation.

The part of my whole experience which really got to me, and the main reason I'm writing this review, is the response of the management regarding their parking situation. I beleive their words were "good luck" and "sorry, we really do not have a solution." They seemed very unaccomodating to my concerns and needs. At the very least they should warn their guests that a parking space is not guaranteed with the rooms, and that city street parking is a gamble (that the car may get towed).

I would not recommend or return to this place ever again.
