The first thing to know is that your options for lodging in this area are not limited to the kitschy, outrageously priced, Disneyland-esque fakery of "Bryce City." There's plenty of lodging in Tropic, which is only about 7 miles down the road. Once you get to Tropic, however, choose anything other than Pioneer Village.
Our experience: Checkin is at 2:00pm, but when we arrived on a Sunday afternoon about 3:15pm, our cabin was not ready. The woman at the reception gave us the key to a second cabin: same deal. It hadn't been cleaned. At that point, many phone calls, the upshot of which was that we had two options: accept the only cleaned cabin, which was more expensive, or take a room in their "motel," adjacent.
I argued that they ought to give us the cabin that was available--and for the same price, given that all of this back and forth had already wasted about 30 minutes, and we were hoping for a quick rest before heading into the park. Oh, no, she couldn't do that without "authorization." Couldn't she get authorization? Well, only if she made "some phone calls." She didn't show any inclination to do so.
Meanwhile, she gave us the key to the motel room so that we could go look at it. When we came back, she'd "realized" the cabin mentioned earlier had actually been reserved, so it wasn't available anyway. In other words, an out-and-out lie (I thought Mormons weren't supposed to do that).
So it was the motel: A cheap, tacky, grungy, dark room with two beds, the mattress on each of which was about as broke-back as you can get. Typical fare for this kind of place: pillows about 3 inches thick; small, scratchy towels, no amenities of any kind.
If this were a King's Inn, who could complain? But the fact is, we were paying over 80 bucks a night for this luxury -- and at that price the Pioneer Village is a rip-off.
Other lovely touches: the office, which she assured us would be open until 10pm, was locked up tight at 9:45am. They also turn off the wireless modem when they close the office, so there's no internet at night or in the early morning if you need it. Doesn't really matter, though, because even when the modem is on, the signal is too weak to reach the "motel" and no connection is possible. Oh, and the phones in the room don't work and there's no cell reception (at least with our carrier), so you'll have to walk to the office if you need anything.
The only reason for a tourist trap like Pioneer Village is greed. Obviously, we didn't stay at any of the other places on the Tropic strip, so can't comment on price/quality. But we can say this: You could probably do much better. You could hardly do worse.
