“Lovely, quirky stay.”
Reviewed 10 October 2013

Stayed one night on a mid-week trip to grab some Heady Topper at The Alchemist in Waterbury. Barre is an easy 20-ish minute drive from there.
Checking in at the restaurant downstairs was fine. We had to wait with our bags for a minute while the hostess found the right server to get us checked in, but there was plenty of room and even a few loungey couches to wait comfortably. Very cute restaurant that was decorated well for Halloween - we wish we were around long enough to try the food.
Lots of steps up to the second floor but not difficult. Once you're checked in you have access to the side entrance so you don't have to come and go through the restaurant.
Room was very elaborately decorated, so there are lots of things to look at! Small kitchen with tiny fridge and microwave, small pub table with two stools, sitting area with setee and two chairs, then a funky wood room divider and a queen size bed. Loved the linens. TV is reasonably sized and has cable!
Bathroom is BIG. Shower with rails and seat (if needed) but no tub. Nice towels. Hairdryer provided.
Common area out in the hall with another million things to look at - suits of armor, old pics of the firehouse hose teams, red velvety couch, old advertisements on the walls - very cool!
Everything was super clean. Would definitely go back. No complaints!

Room Tip: Captain's Studio window faces the parking lot. Good amount of space. Shower has rails and a seat...

This was a most unique experience for lodging. Loved it! The Firehouse Inn comprises the 2nd floor of a renovated firehouse. (The first floor houses the Ladder 1 Grill.) We checked in at the bar of the restaurant, but after that had access to a private entrance for the Inn. Be aware that there is a flight of stairs to climb. If there was an elevator, I was unaware of it, but then we never asked. Staff at the restaurant answered any questions we had and asked if we needed anything every time the saw us.

My husband and I stayed 2 nights in the Captain's Studio. Valerie didn't scrimp on any details. The room was decorated to the hilt, as was the common areas of the Inn. The bedding and towels were luxurious, the TV large (if that is important to you), the kitchen had dishes available as well as a place to clean them up. Only a microwave to cook with, but who wants to spend your vacation cooking! No need to cook either, when you have a wonderful restaurant on the first floor! (We ate dinner there and was pleased with the food.) The Ladder 1 Grill did have live music one of the nights we were there. We could hear it clearly in our room, but no big deal, we just went downstairs for a drink and enjoyed the music. If you're not one to join in, still not a problem as the restaurant closes at 9:00pm, so the music was over before it was time to turn in for the night. (Note: No breakfast at the Ladder 1 Grill.) Our room overlooked the parking lot behind the firehouse, but we didn't find ourselves wanting to look outside, the room was gorgeous on it's own! I would bet the more expensive rooms have views out the front of the firehouse.

One quirky thing, although there is a rest room in the restaurant, there is a public rest room off the common area of the Inn that restaurant patrons are instructed they can use. Since the restaurant closes at 9:00pm, we didn't see this as a problem. We were there on a Wednesday and Thursday night and only noticed people using the bathroom in the Inn a couple of times.

The Inn did not offer housekeeping to us, but again, not a problem. I can make my own bed. We only were there for 2 nights and there were enough fresh towels left in the bathroom for both mornings. A hamper was provided for used towels. (Our room had a roomy shower stall, no tub.)

Cute little downtown to explore in Barre. We also ran up to Montpelier and Waterbury for a day.

Did I say I loved this room??

Not your traditional inn... but better!
