South Shire Inn
Ranked #4 of 9 Bennington B&B and Inns
Reviewed 7 June 2011

This past week was our 11th trip to The South Shire Inn. We have 2 granddaughters who attended and have now graduated from Bennington College, and during their respective years there we came up from New Jersey many times to visit them. We found the South Shire to be a lovely, quiet, and beautiful respite from the hubbub of campus life. The private rooms are comfortable and well equipped, and the spacious living room and dining room are impressively grand, yet give the feeling of being at home and well cared for. Breakfast was always served beautifully and with a variety of options. The South Shire is A+ in our book!

Room Tip: All the rooms are equally lovely.

We were subjected to an hour-long screaming match between the husband and wife owners, complete with swearing and name-calling that made us squirm and confined us to our room. Needless to say, breakfast the next morning was awkward.

Also, a very cold reception in general. And, although the web site quotes low season rates for November, we were charged PEAK ($155/night). Definitely NOT worth it. There are plenty of inns in the area that MUST be more professional and worth the money than this one. This was our anniversary trip, and NOT a good experience.

We arrived in Bennington in mid afternoon, looking for a B$B to stay the night. We are traveling through new England to see the Fall Foliage, so we did not make reservations anywhere along the way - wanted to keep the whole trip spontaneous.
We rang the door bell to the South Shire Inn, and after what seemed a long time a lady opened the door and just gave us a very cold stare up and down - when we inquired about room availability she said very hesitantly yes and showed us to a room. Both my husband and I just got this very unpleasant and cold vibe from her - we are both senior citizens in our 60's, clean and appropriately dressed, not hobos - yet she made us feel like we were not the kind of guests she wanted. So we left - and found instead an absolute gem of a B$B a few miles outside of Bennington. I cannot comment on the quality of the Inn, since we did not stay there - but my advice to the owner would be to study up on customer relations and hospitality if she wants people to stay at her inn.

The South Shire Inn is beautiful. Our room (Jim Dandy) was so comfortable and I particularly enjoyed the jacuzzi bath. The full hot breakfasts were delicious and service was both elegant and friendly. The location is great; the downtown area is just a few blocks away. Joyce Goeke, the innkeeper, was friendly and very helpful. The inn is very well maintained and immaculate.

Met all my expectations and then some. Lovely rooms, I stayed in the Otto and it was a treat. The innkeepers are full of that old New England charm and really tried to make my stay special. The inn is magnificent, restored to time of opulence and must take considerable work to keep it that way. This is not the kind of place to walk around bear foot, if you’re looking to do that I suggest the motel 6.

Our stay started off with a cold reception. During tea we listened to the innkeeper crashing things about the kitchen and screaming at his wife. After we retreated to our room early, we were awakened by him shouting again. Had my friend been feeling well we would have left. I have tried to contact the innkeeper about this and he will not even return my emails.
I would not recommend this place to anyone.
