Looking out over beautiful Lake Champlain you can see all the way to the Adiorandak Mountains of New York State on the other side, 12 miles across. In the lake you can see Juniper Island, four miles out, on the Vermont side, and the Four Brothers Islands beyond that.

Between Shelburne Point and Juniper Island you can see Rock Dunder, which was actually mistaken for an American vessel by a British ship during the Revolutionary War. Throughout the night the British shelled this island until the break of dawn when the captain supposedly yelled, “Why it’s a rock by dunder!” and the name has stuck. The story is proven by the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum who has found cannonballs during scuba dives around Rock Dunder.

For a complete history of the waterfront you can take a segway tour with Burlington Segways.

You have to pay to park here, so once you're here, you might as well enjoy everything. We walked to the beach, which is quite small, but of course the lake is large enough and on a hot day, the water feels great. You could rent those boards you stand up and paddle on. There were so many dogs, which I've never really seen at a beach park. You can bring a picnic- plenty of available tables, but no concessions. The bathrooms were neither well stocked nor clean, but they do have them. Check out the earth clock as the sun goes down. You stand on a specific place and the shadow of your body shows the time pretty accurately. There was a playground, which was pretty average. Be careful as you walk through the park because the bike path is very narrow and it is being used by everyone. The best part for us was staying until sunset. I had heard the sunsets on this lake were gorgeous and they truly won't disappoint. Good place to enjoy the outdoors.

Great place to go in the summer, beach, rock, and green space. Watch out for zebra mussels around the rocks!
Dogs welcome!

We enjoyed Oakledge as a spot for a pre-fireworks picnic and then walked to "the point" for viewing the Fireworks !
