Looking out over beautiful Lake Champlain you can see all the way to the Adiorandak Mountains of New York State on the other side, 12 miles across. In the lake you can see Juniper Island, four miles out, on the Vermont side, and the Four Brothers Islands beyond that.
Between Shelburne Point and Juniper Island you can see Rock Dunder, which was actually mistaken for an American vessel by a British ship during the Revolutionary War. Throughout the night the British shelled this island until the break of dawn when the captain supposedly yelled, “Why it’s a rock by dunder!” and the name has stuck. The story is proven by the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum who has found cannonballs during scuba dives around Rock Dunder.
For a complete history of the waterfront you can take a segway tour with Burlington Segways.
