I spent three nights there with business meetings at the facility. Hotel Vermont is one of the newest hotels in downtown Burlington, and its concept reflects the city's current flair -- hip, youth-oriented, and environmentally aware. HV's creators were design oriented. That's reflected in all the public spaces. The natural oak trims in the lobby, elevators walls, and hallways make a pleasing aesthetic statement. Money spent on design, however, must have led to cutbacks elsewhere. The six-story building does not have enough elevators, and one of the two does frequent double-duty as a freight elevator. Along with time waiting, you'll frequently ride with trash bags and linen carts. The rear elevator doors on one elevator open into maintenance and storage spaces on multiple floors. The builders also saved money by scrimping on the quality of guest room construction. Some of the bathroom fixtures are cheaply attached to the walls, and the electrical outlets reflect shoddy work. The shower's wall-mounted soap and shampoo bottles dribble rather than dispense. More than one of my group reported problems with broken plaster or "springy" electric wall plugs. I liked the simple room design and furnishings, although others may find the guest rooms bare. HV, please do buy some folding luggage racks, though. The only current alternatives are the floor, the window seat, or the desk. Location is great -- a few blocks to Church Street and an equal distance to the waterfront. Finally, service needs some attention to detail. The youthful staff was friendly and well-meaning, but seemed to lack mature direction. I couldn't interest anyone in seating me for breakfast one morning and ended up going next door. Food service was otherwise okay as long as expectations are not too high.
