Very helpful volunteers who help you choose and set up correct bikes. The prices are fair and this non profit organization a an amazing amount of work for bike trails in the area. Located right on the Bike path it is the perfect starting point to head out for a nice ride.

“The most effective bike advocacy group in the U.S. today”
Reviewed 25 February 2014

Local Motion is probably the most effective bicycle advocacy group in the entire country. Their work in advocating for safer streets for bicycles and in extending the Burlington Bike Path to the Champlain Islands in exemplary. Their operation of a bike ferry across the mouth of the Winooski River in the 1990s led to the rebuilding of the bridge by Governor Howard Dean and the extension of the Burlington Bike Path out onto the old railroad causeway in Colchester.

The Causeway is one of the most spectacular sections of bike path anywhere in the world. It is certainly worth the trip. Rent a bike at the Trailside Center and go north on the Burlington Bike Path about 5 miles. Cross the Winooski River on the Bike Path Bridge and continue northward on the path as it snakes through a few residential neighborhoods, out onto Colchester Point, past the Colchester Bog and out onto the Causeway.

Local Motion has moved the bike ferry to the Cut (or gap) in the Causeway about 2.5 miles out into the lake and they will provide bike ferry services across the Cut daily from June 14 to September 6, 2014. They will provide weekend service from May 24 to October 13, 2014.

This ferry ride will allow you to bike all the way out to the Champlain Islands. Bring a picnic lunch and eat out on the Causeway or at one of the restaurants in the Islands. It’s a great round trip bike ride of over 25 miles.

And your bike rental fees go to a great non-profit organization that has put Burlington on the map as the Queen City of bicycling in the northeast. Enjoy!
