“Had a wonderful time”
Reviewed 20 May 2011

Just before going to Vermont, read the latest review of this resort and went with some trepidation, but we were very pleasantly surprised. Had a wonderful time with our Tavelzoo coupon. Our room was large and clean, staff was very courteous and friendly. Ate all our meals in The Tavern and enjoyed them all. The staff made us aware of what was available for our "Travelzoo" dinner and we chose appropriately. Despite the wet course, we did golf 9 holes at the Executive Links and enjoyed the experience. We also did some biking around the area, but for serious bikers, I would suggest, bringing your own bikes and going into Burlington(about 7miles away). It was a great coupon and we would go again and explore more of the area. The outlet mall is also within walking distance, an added bonus.

We stayed 2 nights with a Travelzoo special that included a 3 course dinner with wine. We felt that the Essex Resort was a treat to visit. The ambience is good and the meal was fine. We especially liked the "quick breakfast" that included juice, coffe, cereal, oatmeal or a wonderful museli with yogurt, and pastry or toast all for $6! The almond croissants are wonderful!

Can't understand the ratings. We are seasoned travelers and diners and must say this place was possibly the biggest disappointment ever. Bought a 2 nite package with one meal included from Travelzoo. Told to order any appetizer, entree, desert and house wine , which we did. At the end of the meal we were told there was a charge for the upgraded wine and food we ordered. We were never told beforehand that there was a 'special travelzoo wine' and we could not have the 'specials and so we would be charged the difference. We argued and they finally agreed to charge us just for the wine but we were not allowed to have any desert. This really added a nice feeling to the whole dining experience. The waitress was rude and created an unnecessary scene. Culinary resort? The food was no better than Applebees or Friendly's and with same ambience.
Now to the room, well we left after the first night even though we had prepaid for 2.
Room shabby, comforters had disgusting stains on them nothing at all special about this hotel. In all of Vermont they found just the right view of a shopping mall and highway.
I couldn't wait to get home, wash all our clothes and shower. Felt so dirty unable to sleep.
The receptionist would not refund us and was cold and unfeeling. Don't waste your hard earned money or time with this place. Outrageous prices for very poor quality.

Really nice weekend was just spent here. As other reviewers said the rooms are just ok, need a bit of updating but the bed was very comfortable and everything was clean. The grounds are very pretty with all the flowers. Now, the SPA is fantastic! Wendy and Aniana were amazing, my husband and I had side by side manicures and pedicures and these ladies made the experience even more wonderful. They both were so friendly and fun, we could've stayed all day. The relaxation room after is wonderful.
Sunday morning we took our spring brunch cooking class with Chef Mykayla, she was fun, professional and very "real". We learned a lot and laughed the entire time, especially during the omelette flipping! Of course the best part was eating our creations! All in all we would return to the Essex Inn to take advantage of the spa and cooking classes.

We had a queen suite on the main floor which featured a whirlpool tub and gas fireplace. Didn't use the tub, but, the fireplace was a nice touch that helped take the chill out of the air. This room is complete with kitchen which we also didn't use, after all, it was a (long) weekend getaway. The furniture is a little tired (especially the sofa), but, the room was very quiet and the mattress was OK (not great but OK), besides, one doesn't go to a resort and spa to sit around in one's room. The fitness center is very well equipped and spacious; not your typical two or three machines crammed into a closet space just so the place can boast a gym. Ditto for the pool (which is twice the size you will normally find) and hot tub (with two sections, so there's lots of room). The spa is a bit on the pricey side $110 for 50 minute massage.
The staff is ace!
The restaurant is small and is frequented by locals who don't even stay at the resort. Yes, the food is good, but, in the greater Burlington area, there are many to choose from. We found the veggies to be overcooked and the food a little salty for our taste (but we don't cook with salt at home, so, we tend to find restaurant food salty more often than not).
The executive golf course is well maintained and this was opening weekend, after a very wet beginning to Spring, so it should be terrific once the sunshine shows up.
They also offer cooking courses, but, can't comment... remember, this was a getaway weekend:)

My husband and I had a great time at The Essex even though it was a rainy Spring weekend. There were crepes when we arrived and a full case of treats ready for purchase. We hit the outlets that were minutes down the street. Our room was simple and perfect for what we needed. We hung out at the Tavern many nights to watch the Bruins playoff games. They had an excellent wine and scotch selection. We did an afternoon in Burlington (30 minutes away) with shopping and lunch. The cooking class was fun and we made some friends who were also staying at the resort. The hot tub was hot unlike what some other reviews have said (it was 50 degrees though). If it wasn't raining, we would have done the many other outdoor activities available such at hiking, biking, golfing, and fly fishing (the pond wasn't stocked yet)

Be aware that the restaurant will be under construction but sounds like they will still offer dinning.

We look forward to coming here again with the friendly staff and the relaxing atmosphere.
