“Lovely layout, but needing some updates”
Reviewed 21 June 2014

The staff at the Essex were cheery and accomodating, and the layout of the grounds and our premeir suite was very nice.

I can tell by the pictures that some of the rooms have been very nicely updated-- ours however had not, not since the opening of the resort by the looks of it. It felt a little like false advertising.

The pools were fun for the kids and the restaurants had great options for all 4 of us.

The grounds could really use a sprucing up, lots of errant grass in the landscaped beds and tons of dandelions and weeds in the lawn. My husband and son tried the lawn checkers, but even early in the season, the set was missing several pieces,

My massage was great and the spa was perfect in every way-- luxurious robes and great personnel and facilities.

In short, it felt the main infrastructure needs of a hotel and restaurant were there, but not enough attention to detail pizazz for a world-class resort.

Dear Rebecca M,

Thank you for choosing to stay with us at the Essex Resort & Spa and for having a great time. While I agree that a constant attention to details, wear and tear maintenance is required, I must say that much has been done to keep the Resort in tip top shape. Flat screen TV's in all rooms, Keurig coffee makers, WIFI, property wide, a mattress replacement program, IPOD docks, upgraded pillows & bedding and much more in just our rooms. Our driveway was just re-surfaced, our signature restaurant has been completely remade in both appearance and service level.....the list goes on.
Please forgive us for the dandelions. As part of our green commitment, we do not use harsh chemicals anywhere on property. This puts us at a slight disadvantage in the fight against the worthy adversaries in our lawns.

Little sister and I on a girls trip from Florida.
2 Great cooking classes with Brandy. Who even heard of Fiddle Fern? But oh so yummy! Several bike rides around the beautiful neighborhoods, a dip in the hot tub. A visit to the Links golf shop for a shirt. Booked a walking tour that included a delish lunch from Essex all home made bread and sweets. Can't wait to get back out there and visit the spa next time.
Thanks Essex. Red headed driver from front desk that took us to airport was great sorry I forgot your name. Staff was great rooms were great.

Booked this hotel due to the high mark reviews. The price was decent but still was not a steal at $200 per night. Hate the fact the hotel charges an extra $20 resort fee then upon check in, they tell me the indoor pool and jacuzzi are being renovated.

We booked a double beds room, now, by saying double beds, they really mean two full size beds! If you're a bigger build and taller person, you will not be comfortable sharing a double bed with your significant other! Also, the beds are extremely soft.

The thing about this place bothers me the most is the lack if service. I called the front desk twice to ask a question, they left the phone unanswered the first time for twenty rings. I finally had to call back and the front desk assured me there are food services at the poolside. In fact, this was stated when I checked in that there are food services at the poolside. However, we were at the pool for two hours during lunch hour, did not see a single person at sight.

Overall, we would not retire. It's a resort wanna be with a prettier name by calling themselves spa and resort, but don't expect too much!

Room Tip: Spend your money elsewhere!

Dear TravelerJZ68,

You should expect too much from the Essex Resort & Spa! We expect a lot from ourselves and are disappointed when our guests do not have an over the top experience. Please accept my apology for the service related issues you experienced.
Hopefully these did not completely overshadow your stay with us and the pleasant memories will be with you for some time.

I have stayed at The Essex twice and it just keeps getting better! The space is well maintained and the rooms are beautifully decorated. The food in the dining room is over-the-top fantastic! I look forward to staying here again!

My family of six stayed one night in one of their mini-suite rooms. Very nicely furnished and decorated. It was fun to see the kids faces as we came into the "super fancy" room. The resort grounds are very nice with lots of activities. We swam in the indoor pool which is large for a hotel and has a 2ft deep entry which was nice for younger kids. We ate in the Tavern and really enjoyed our meals. There's an outlet mall a few minutes away, with a cinema and about 30 stores. Overall great value for the money and would definitely return. Our kids kept asking to stay one more night!

This trip was to visit family in the area. It is a lovely property on many manicured acres.
The grounds are very pretty with hammocks placed here and there, and vegetable
gardens behind the outside portion of the restaurant. The indoor pool is a very large lap
pool with a hottub right outside. The outdoor pool is on the smaller side but very nice.
The towels for the pools were plentiful and well placed at poolside.
We received a room upgrade as the hotel was not totally booked. The room was very
attractive and the beds so comfortable. The bathroom was well appointed with nice
toiletries, shower cap, sewing kit, etc. The room had a fireplace and seating area.
The basic room charge was the same as the generic chain hotels. There is a "resort charge" of $20.00 per day. It was so worth it to stay in such a lovely venue. There was
a wedding there and they had perfect outdoor spot at a gazebo with chairs set up on the very green lawn. My family would definitely recommend The Essex Resort

Room Tip: We had a room at the restaurant end of the second floor, so we had windows on two sides

Stayed with friends during Easter weekend. Unfortunately the heating/air-con kept me awake. First night 73dB (thanks to decibel measuring app) - after complaining just below 70. Too noisy to sleep, so it had to be switched off. Not very pleasant.
No dinner reservation possible for hotel guests. We were provided with a buzzer and told that we would have to wait for 45 minutes. After 60 minutes and no buzzing we went down and asked. Surely there should be the service of calling in-house guests in case of a delay. Other guests were told that ordering room-service would be quicker.
No "How did you like your stay? Good-bye" at check-out
Quality of food was good but won't be coming back

Dear Petra Doris L,

Thank you for choosing to enjoy your Easter with the Essex Resort & Spa.
I am sorry to hear the climate control unit in your room was a disturbance to you. We too have used decibel monitors and have found them to be far lower than your results. Even so, it is unfortunate that you found the levels to be unacceptable. Our guests and locals alike love our restaurants and we are a victim of our own success at times. We have a greater demand than we have space to accommodate. With the warmer months we now have our outdoor patio open and thus and increase in seating space. Please consider a return visit as I am sure we can provide you with the level of service and care you would expect from us.
