“wonderful experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 August 2014

This is the second time my wife and I have visited this inn. Both times have been wonderful. The first time we both attended a cooking class which was very good. This last time we tried out their new restaurant and the food was out standing the chefs came and explained each course before they were served. The people at the front desk couldn't have been nicer and more accommodating. Thank you Jill. WE also tried out the Tavern, The bartender Holly couldn't be nicer. Food was also good in tavern. Will be looking for our next trip back

Room Tip: Be nice and you will be treated nice. Higher floors have lessA/C noise and a better view.

Dear papacran,

It is such a great compliment when a guest returns after having an enjoyable stay only to have another positive experience. Your praise of Junction, Jill at the Front Desk and Holly at the Tavern are much appreciated and thank you for your generous review of Junction as well.

My husband and two teenagers stayed in this resort just one night, wish it were more. Upon arrival check in was very thorough and quick. In the main building lobby there is complimentary iced tea and cookies throughout the day. We visited but did not use the pools, hot tubs and gym. All were clean, spacious and very well kept. We did stop into the pub on sight, very nice pretty outdoor space-could use a little more landscaping but we enjoyed it just the same. There was a bonfire at night where we sat and gazed at the Supermoon, conversed with other guests and enjoyed S'mores, complimentary of the resort. We LOVED the bonfire-extremely relaxing and fun. We had a suite for a room-very spacious with room for our teens and a seperate room for us. Lots of closets and a kitchen stocked with everything but the food. There was also a wood stove, table and two flat screened televisions. Awesome place to go summer, fall or winter. There were also two weddings this particular weekend and the resort didn't feel over the top crowded and the staff weren't rushed. We also ate breakfast in the hotel, not the fancy reservation restaurant but the grill I believe, very tasty:) My husband and I stayed here when the resort first opened and I will admit that it was fresher and seemed a tiny bit more upscale, though fresh it just wasn't a welcoming, charming place back then. Yes, it could use a teensy tiny bit of love, but this is really a nice place. It's upscale meets mildly rustic. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: The suites are nice if you want a little privacy from the other people you travel with. The regular...

I don't get what's so great about this hotel. My fella and I spent two nights here over the summer and, while the size of our room was substantial, our stay was unimpressive. We began by waking up to no coffee. Our room had been stocked with decaf. Honest mistake. Then we called down to order room service. I ordered a yogurt parfait. What I got was a cup of plain yogurt. I called back down to inform them that parfait would imply fruit (this is a culinary institute). They took away the first yogurt cup and replaced it with fruits...and nuts. I'm allergic to nuts. K moving on. After my non-breakfast, the maid proceeded to "walk in on us" after my calling to her twice from the other room that we were "fine. Come back later!".... Just sayin'. Not exactly a romantic getaway, unless you're into that.

Dear Elizabeth G,

Please accept my apology for the missteps with breakfast. I have shared this information with our Director of Culinary Services so she may speak with the individuals working that day to ensure they are aware of what is expected. Our Housekeepers are trained to knock first, announce themselves and then knock again prior to entering a room. It is unfortunate that they did not hear you response but I am certain they meant no harm. Please note that should you choose to return and for all of our future guests, we provide a "do not disturb" sign on each room to be placed outside the door to alert Housekeeping as well as a bolt operated from inside the room that prevents the door from being opened even by a Housekeeper with a pass key.

The good: nice staff. Easy to get to. Nice afternoon wine and cheese deal.
The not so: Feels slightly neglected. Grounds to linens, carpets to paint, all a little beaten up. Needs some buffing up to charge the rates they're asking.

Dear MattDenver,

Thank you for your praise and recognition of our friendly associates. We do have great, genuine hospitality professionals that work to ensure every guest has a great visit. Each Friday at 3pm we invite on of our wine merchants in to host an afternoon wine tasting and discussion with our guests. This happens right in our lobby with some cheese and fruit from our kitchen. Last week Chef Calley was inspired to make crepes with some fresh blueberries he had on hand.
Please accept my apology for not meeting your expectations in terms of the property itself. We have teams dedicated to landscaping, painting and general care and maintenance. Clearly it is a job that is never complete and one that we must keep a keen focus on. Your comments are taken seriously and we are always working to improve.

This inn is really well located just a few minutes from Burlington, close to outlet shopping and a fun little golf course. The grounds are very nice with excellent spa and pool facilities in a great garden setting. They pride themselves as a culinary inn. while we did not participate in any of the culinary courses, we did eat both nights on site. The tavern is very relaxed with a good menu, excellent service and superb food (very reasonably priced). The Junction is their signature dining experience. The food is exceptional, equaled by the service. Reservations in advance for the Junction are required. Suggest booking at the time of booking the accommodation. The room we had was very large and generally comfortable, but the bed, while ok, was a bit uncomfortable.

We would definitely go back to The Essex.

Location is really good as it is away from the hustle of Burlington. Many amenities, biking and hiking at property and the grounds are very nice indeed. Do be vigilant about what is going on at the Resort when you plan to visit as the rooms vary and there are some that are much more pleasing than others and if there is a large event it may impact your options a bit. The first room we were sent to was very dark and luckily we were able to get moved into another building and the room was a large suite looked like an apartment- it was the bomb. We loved the location as it is easy access to Montpelier and Stow which we definitely wanted to see also. Yes, there is the NORMAL TOUREST JUNK everywhere so just plan your trip and try not to get distracted and you will be rewarded. The dining options are good at the Resort. The bar food is bar food but served energetically by an engaged staff. The upgrade restaurant was very good. The dining room is light and well appointed. The food is well above most resort restaurants. You do not need to go elsewhere to get pampered and have terrific and healthy food. Our friends stayed elsewhere and I believe they would have rather stayed at the Essex. It is quite pricy but what isn't at this time of year.

Room Tip: Look at more than 1 room if possible there is a huge difference in the offerings. This is a pet fri...

Dear Richard D,

Your appreciation of the many options offered at the Essex Resort & Spa are much appreciated. You can come and stay with us, never leave the property and have a great time. Or, you can choose to visit Burlington or the many surrounding towns, have a great time and retreat to the quiet and serene grounds of the resort.

this is a great getaway in the mountains. it has an outdoor pool as well as indoor and a hot tub just outside of the spa. the food in their new restaurant Junction is amazing. we have been coming here for the last ten years and this was the best meal we ever had. it had flavor and a very European feel and all made with local ingredients.highly recommend it if you need to relax.

Room Tip: the rooms are all very well appointed. the rooms are bigger in the main building.
