“Great Holiday Vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 December 2012 via mobile

The Smugglers Notch Inn is a hidden gem. It has a cozy feel and the hosts, Bill and Cathy, were very attentive and welcoming. The accommodations were very clean and comfortable. The Breakfast Cafe at the Inn was excellent. I highly recommend a visit.

Our experience was similar to what a few others have posted.

We arrived, walked into the building, and no one was there. The office was a room that was adjacent to an old, very spacious livingroom. The livingroom had bookcases, a large fireplace and some games. We rang the bell got no response, although the office was open and it looked like someone had been there recently.

After about 10 minutes, one of the managers came downstairs but said we wern't registered for that night. I showed her the confirmation, and she agreed to contact the owner of the inn to verify.

In the meantime, she said she would clean up a room upstairs and we could settle things up in the morning.

She returned about 10 minutes later and took us upstairs to one of the rooms. We walked down the hall and there was a room with 2 people in it who had the door wide open the entire evening. You kind of felt like you were being observed each time you left the room, but it wasn't a dealbreaker---just sort of strange. We always keep the door closed.

The room itself was fine, having been around since 1797. The floors were sort of uneven, but it had its charm. The bed was totally comfortable. The room had cable TV and free intenet. My wife complained of getting vertigo in the bathroom which she thought was wierd, but I did not notice anything of the sort.

The restaurant below actually exceeded expectations. They make good hamburgers and have great customer service.

The next morning when we checked out, it was a similar situation. Crickets---no one there. Finally after about 10 minutes another co-manager came down, said our bill was paid, and we were on our way.

This is a good value inn and convenient to the Stowe area. It definitely has its charm.

We apologize for any delay that may occur with checking in. Please understand that we are a small inn with usually one innkeeper on duty. The innkeeper is not only responsible for checking folks in, but also responsible for cleaning the rooms and doing the laundry which is all upstairs while the lobby is downstairs. We do our best to have all work done prior to the 3 pm check in however depending on the number of checkouts and check ins occurying on any given day, this doesn't always happen.

We will strive to continue to offer better service and be more present during check in times.

We chose this Inn due to its location and the positive reviews here. Unfortunately it was a disappointing experience. When we first arrived at the Inn there was not a soul to be found. The place was deserted. There was a note to ring the bell or call a phone number. We rang the bell multiple times,, nothing. We tried to call but there is no cell phone service. We decided to try to bakery attached to the Inn while we waited, and were rudely told they were closed. The closed at 2pm and it was 2:06 pm. Fast forward 1 and a half hours cold and hungry sitting in an unheated lobby area when the inn keeper shows up. We were given our keys and headed upstairs to our room. The room was clean but what I would describe as a shoe box. There are no environmental controls in the room.. No heat or A/C. There was one window that we could prop open with a piece of wood and we found a fan in the closet. Good thing since in the middle of the night we woke up feeling like we were in a sauna. Apparently there is a heat control in the hallway and the whole floor is controlled with one thermostat! In the hallway we also found an array of space heaters and portable fans.. Guess that is a common complaint about the lack of heat and a/c.
That evening we went to the pub that is attached the Inn. Nachos were quite good. The chicken entree was surprisingly spicy.. Not my taste and I would have appreciated an indication on the menu that it was a spicy dish. My fiance who enjoys spicy food that it was too much as well.
Needless to say we won't be back to the Smugglers Notch Inn.

I would highly recommend this place. A very old building, in fact it is named as a Historical Site. But don't let that deter you. The rooms are updated, the beds are comfortable and it is very clean. The owners are very friendly. The rates are reasonable. They give you $5.00 per person per day credit to be used in the restaurant or bakery. Both of which I would highly recommend. The food at both of these establishments was outstanding and resonably priced.

We will definitely stay here again!

Pretty much exactly what you envision if asked to paint a portrait of a vacation in Vermont. Old style Inn with about a dozen adequate guest rooms, good hospitality, great bakery and very reasonable prices. If you're familiar with The Newhart show, now you can go live it. This is not a 5-star luxury Inn and you should keep your expectations in check. In our case, it is exactly what we expected over our New Year's eve stay. Great little bar connected to the Inn and all the local characters to add to the ambiance. Very satisfied. Good access to Smugglers' Notch ski resort and just a stone's throw from the 158 Main Restaurant and Bakery. This place exceeds expectation but deserves a review of its own. Phenomenal breakfast and excellent lunch and dinners. Quality to price is hard to beat.

On the downside; not a big negative if you know what you're getting into, the water is slow to heat up, the walls are thin, their are slight gaps under the doors and floors are crooked. Pretty much all the charm you want from an old Inn! If your Inn neighbours are respectful of this, the holiday or weekend stay will be thoroughly enjoyed. I also enjoyed the outdoor hot tub after a day on the slopes.

They offer 1 and 2-bed rooms with a larger multi-room suite for families. The grocery store and liquor store are just across the road. I tend to gravitate to these properties and destinations as other areas start to over develop and lose track of their roots. Check them out for a real traditional ski, hike, fish or fresh air holiday weekend in Vermont.

Room Tip: The suite is located at the top of the main stairwell. I could see it getting loud but depends upon...

First experience no hot water in the shower and they refused to believe us. Then finally fixed it but nothing in return. Second visit the rental cottage was marginal. They don't reflect the real image of Smugglers Notch which is a great mountain.
