Mountain Valley Retreat B&B
Ranked #7 of 14 Killington B&B and Inns
Reviewed 7 December 2012

We had the pleasure of staying at the Mountain Valley B&B over the 2012 Thanksgiving holiday. We stayed four days. For those who don’t like lengthy reviews, I’ll sum it all up by saying it was a terrific place to stay, with great scenery and an accommodating host. The breakfasts were excellent as well. There’s also decent wireless connectivity for those that can’t live without the internet. We highly recommend it.

Now for a bit of detail:

My wife and I are from Dallas, TX and in our late 50’s. We try to stay in B&B’s whenever we can, so this was not our first rodeo.

Location: Score – 10

Located on River Road, which is a well maintained dirt road, the house is set well back from the road and there’s nothing behind it. If you’re a skier, it’s in an excellent location. It’s literally 5 minutes away from the main ski slopes for that area of Vermont. The one neighboring house is several hundred yards away and not visible from the B&B. In other words, it’s very, very quiet. There’s a small babbling brook and water fall on the south side of the house that can be seen from the guest rooms. It’s relatively easy to find. There is a sign out by the road that’s easy to spot.

Accommodations: Score – 9

This is a two bedroom B&B. The bedrooms are on the second floor, up a fairly narrow staircase. This is not a problem, but I mention it for those that may be sporting some heavy luggage. There’s no facilities for the handicapped (i.e. ramps, grab bars, etc). If you can’t climb stairs, this is not your place.

The view from both guest rooms is grand. The main room has two walls of knee to ceiling windows overlooking the stream and uphill slope of the mountain. Very serene and scenic. On our last day, we even got to see it with some snow on it. The second room has one wall of floor to ceiling windows overlooking the stream. All in all, quite nice.

The main room bed was quite high and very comfortable. There was a tempurpedic type foam layer over the mattress covered with a down comforter. There were plenty of pillows. We both slept very well. There’s also two closets in the main bedroom along with tons of drawer space. There were also plenty of power outlets accessible to charge all those devices that have become a part of lives.

Based on feedback from Mike, our host, he uses the second room for “spillover”. His intent is to rent to single couples that may have children. In other words, you won’t have to be exposed to strangers during your stay. The whole place is yours to use.
The upstairs bathroom servicing the second floor is across the hall from the main room and adjacent to the second room. We’re talking a very short distance (~2 ft), but the bathroom is not in suite. It’s small, strictly one person. There’s not a lot of counter space to lay out toiletries. It has a shower, but no tub. The water pressure was great and the hot water plentiful. The downstairs bathroom is very large with a large whirlpool tub for those so inclined.

Downstairs is the kitchen, great room, dining room and Mike’s office. There’s a basement and a garage, but we had no reason to see either. It’s an open floor plan. The dining room is in a large bay window area that has room for the table and chairs. Again, nice scenery for breakfast. The great room has a wood burning stove that Mike keeps going all the time. It kept things quite toasty and gave a nice feel and atmosphere to the room. There are also skylights in the great room and a TV with satellite/cable. Feel free to bring your own wine and/or beer. You can use the refrigerator if needed.

Breakfast: Score – 10

Mike cooked us whatever we requested the night before. I don’t know where he buys his bacon, but it’s the best I’ve ever had. It may just be a Vermont thing as the syrup was local as well and delicious. He also makes great pancakes. Just let him know before you arrive what you want so he can have the ingredients on hand. Juices and coffee were also available, as was fresh oranges and apples. All in all, nicely done.

Cleanliness: Score – 10

Everything was very clean. The house looks as it has had a lot of refinishing work, so the paint seemed fresh and we didn’t note any odors. Believe, my wife can pick up any kind of odor. The sheets and towels were crisp and felt new. The shower and commode were also squeaky clean with no mold or other residue to be found.

Host: Score – 10

We would be hard pressed to find a nicer guy than Mike. We christened him Magic Mike because we such a pleasant experience. He is very good with communications. Trading frequent emails prior to our arrival to ensure we had everything we needed and knew where to go. There were fresh baked muffins when we arrived which were great.
He took us on a nature hike to an area adjacent to his property that was comprised of a very large and interesting waterfall as well as many other scenic areas. It takes around 45 minutes to an hour and be as strenuous as you want it to be. To get the full effect, you will have to some uphill walking. If you’re not so inclined, the waterfall is easy to get to. The stream area at the top can be reached by car.

Mike was very attentive to our needs and schedule. We arranged a time for breakfast each evening. On our last day, it snowed. While we were eating breakfast, I looked out the window and saw Mike sweeping the snow off our car. Now that’s service!

Please keep in mind that you’re sharing Mike’s house. There’s no segregated area for guests. Mike can be as scarce or present as you need him to be. We found him pleasant and engaging. He really works hard to make sure your visit is a pleasant one. We found his rates to most reasonable and somewhat below market. That could change based on the season.
For those sites that allow it, I have pictures of the interior and exterior posted at:

We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. B&B’s can be such a crap shoot. In this case, we were really fortunate. I’m a photographer and I didn’t have to go far to find photo worthy scenery. The area was lovely and isolated. The house was a beautiful place to stay with a most pleasant host. We would definitely stay there again.

Mike treated us like family, bringing us on a magical waterful hike adjacent to his property and cooking breakfast for us (coddled eggs with homemade hashbrowns, muffins, and ham and zucchini- vegetables grown by him and eggs laid by his hens). The house is beautiful, looking out directly on to mountains. We were in garret rooms that had huge inbuilt raised beds and windows that opened to allow the sound of adjacent stream. I would recommend this stay to anyone looking for a truly vermont experience in both locale and hospitality.
