Many, many moons ago my mother would load us into the Chevy wagon and take us up skiing at Elk Mountain, Pa. We stayed in an old farm house B& B with the wood stove going, a deer head on the wall and families, tired from a day of skiing, playing backgammon, Scrabble or Candyland. Breakfast was a hearty one served at family tables. Then it was off to the slopes for another day of skiing.

The Combes Family Inn brings back all those great memories. Their inn is old Vermont with an addition that has some motel like rooms. Nothing fancy but very clean and friendly. The fire roars in the open wood stove as families gather to play games and socialize before the evening meal. The proprietors, Ruth and Bill, prepare a great home cooked dinner and then sit down with their guest for dinner and stories. Afterwards, it's more games and socializing until families drift off to their rooms for the evening. It's the kind of place that families and couples come back to several times during the ski season.

If you're looking to have a martini by the outdoor heated pool after your eucalyptus masage and then come in for a gourmet meal and a fine bordeaux while checking messages on your iPad , you're looking at the wrong place. But, if you want a great family oriented Vermont experience the Combes Family Inn would be it.

It's a bit hard to rate as Ruth and Bill do "Vermont country inn" really well but not what one would think of as a four star rating so I give it three stars.

A couple notes:
Dinner is $20 extra and you need to let Ruth know in advance. It's a fixed menu but Ruth will accommodate if you have special needs.
It's BYOB. You should also bring along cheese and crackers to have before dinner.

Ruth and Bill Combes are gracious and fun hosts at this inn inLudlow Vermont. The inn itself is very outdated in style but the hospitality is first rate. The rooms are very large and would be perfect for family groups. The inn to inn tour includes dinner as well as breakfast and a snack for the road. The food was delicious, hot, and well presented. The inn is out of town, but it is a good first stop for the walking tour.

Room Tip: There is one room on the ground floor and the rest are upstairs. Because the inn is isolated, there is no problem with noise.

I am part of a group of friends who started hunting this area over 40 years ago. Every November we return to the Combes family Inn, although none hunt anymore. The friendly atmosphere and accommdations is the reason that we return each year. Ruth and Bill are the greatest host putting up with tall tales of former hunters. The quality and quantity of the delicious food are truly outstanding and Bill's breakfast is a wholesome way to start the day. The kitchen dinning area is the place to share good food and drink with friends. If you are looking for a place to step back from the hustle and bustle of the electronic age, the Combes Family Inn is that placefor you and your family.

Room Tip: For an old New England feeling choose the rooms in the main Inn. Each room is decorated differently and each has its special feel. Hunters and skiers may enjoy the exterior ground level units. Don't look for a pool, nearest water dip is Echo Lake or Buttermilk Falls and that is not recommended in November.

I stayed here on the second night of a one-week solo road trip through New England. Ruth and Bill are awesome! I stayed in the main house and opted for the family-style dinner which was so yummy! (I really needed some good home cooking after a week in the city.) The grounds are just lovely, and the Inn is a bit off the beaten path, but well worth the trip. I would definitely recommend this spot to anyone traveling in central Vermont. Bill's breakfast was great, too!

We stayed at the Combes Family Inn for 2 nights. The inn was welcoming, clean and well located. Breakfast was quite good and Bill, the chef was accomodating. Rooms are nicely kept and have a country feel. Ruth and Bill were very friendly and helpful. We would stay there again.

Room Tip: WE stayed in Room 10. Nice space.
