“GORGEOUS GARDENS”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 December 2013

This is truly an enjoyable experience any time of the year. However, my favorite is during the summer when the gardens are in bloom. They take immaculate care of the property I just wish my gardens were as nice.

“Hildene is worth a visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 November 2013

I have lived in Manchester for 40 years ! People have been coming to Vermont to vacation and enjoy all there is to offer since the 1890! Robert Todd Lincoln built a summer 20,000 sq. ft cottage so he could escape to Vermont in the summer.
Come see why, He and thousands of others chose Vermont as their getaway!

“Wonderful Historical Site but not for Children”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 November 2013

Hildene was the summer home of Robert Todd Lincoln, the son of Abraham Lincoln. It was built when Robert was 62, after he had made his fortune as the president of the Pullman train car company and of course, long after the President's death. It is a lovely neo-Georgian house, saved and/or restored to look as it did in Robert's lifetime. It shows how the wealthy lived in the early years of this past century. There are guides available to whom you can ask questions. On the 2nd floor, there is a temporary exhibit on Abraham Lincoln that was excellent. I believe it will be leaving June 2014. As part of the admission ($16 adult), you can also visit a very fancy Pullman train car, again with a guide to answer your questions. The guide explained some of the history of the Negro Pullman porters who were treated rather poorly by the Pullman company. An interesting political cartoon posted outside the Pullman car suggests that Robert Lincoln enslaved the people his father had freed. Finally, again part of the admission, you can visit a working dairy farm where cheese is actually produced. We didn't get to visit the farm. As I think my description suggests, except for maybe the farm, there is nothing, absolutely nothing to interest or engage young children. We felt sorry for a couple that brought their young children: the children were crying and fidgety so nobody in that group was having a good time. My wife and I enjoyed this attraction and feel it was worth the price.

“Gorgeous!”

This is a not-to-miss tour. The grounds are breath-taking and the mansion is beautifully restored. Don't forget to walk over to the restored Pullman train car...very impressive. Gift shop attendant was very cordial and helpful. Only downside was the steep uphill walk up to the house (ask if there is a jitney).

“A must see and you will always remember it.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 November 2013

Hildene was a treat to visit and tour. As mansions go, it was surprisingly small in appearance, but it was, after all, a summer residence. The Lincoln Home is impressive in its styling and simplicity. We sought out the guided tour offered at 1:00PM on the day we visited. The tour guide was amazing and he pointed out all the historic features. The staff also made sure everyone heard the organ which is played every day. (Having a pipe organ in the early 1900's was similar to having a private movie theater in your home today or a super stereo system today.)

The rail car on display down the path on site is very impressive. The attention to detail in rehabilitating the car is evident and one can only imagine the comfort travelers in this Pullman car enjoyed.

If you are in the area, don't miss Hildene. It was on my list for years and I am so glad to have seen it. What a joy to have such a property still around to visit.
