“offensive, dirty, very very overpriced for a moldy dirty room.”
Reviewed 13 November 2010

Booked a room in the Inn I was looking forward to our stay, but was put in the annex, due to my 6 pound service dog, I have emphysema. We had called twice before arriving, yet no one could be bothered to walk over and turn on the heat in our room. We had to sit in coats for an hour, the bedding is stained and smelly, I sat up on the couch all night bundled up from having to keep the window opened so I could breath from the smell The room has a horrible musty, moldy smell, which caused me to have a breathing attack, I had to get on my oxygen, or end up in a Hospital from respitory distress. For $169.00 a night this is totally unacceptable, I have stayed in cleaner Hotel 6's for $49.00. They should be ashamed and should let anyone with a health challenge know to look elsewhere. I really really regret coming here.

We sincerely apologize for the experience this guest encountered. Regarding the heat, we should have turned it on in the room prior to this guest's arrival and we will work on training to insure this happens with all of our guests. Regarding the other comments, we pride ourselves on keeping rooms that are clean, well-maintained and, of course, free of bad odors. We do limit pets to a handful of rooms and eliminating odors in those rooms sometimes entails extra treatment. That treatment must always occur but it sounds like it did not happen properly or adequately in this case.
The Middlebury Inn did recently undergo major renovation and refurbishment, which included new carpet and new bathroom flooring throughout the Inn, and upgrades in bedding and other improvements around the Inn.
We hope this guest will give us another chance and will contact me directly at 802.388.4961 to discuss this further. Jeff Costello, General Manager.

We went up to Middlebury to see our soon play football for the college and stayed for two nights. I love the feel of the Inn -- there is nothing cookie cutter about it. The lobby area was a warm friendly place to gather and both mornings they graciously accmmodated ten of us with small grandchildren in tow. The buffet breakfast waas perfect for making sure kids got what they wantd. The staff is pleasant and helpful. I also really like the shelves of books in the hallways avail for reading while you are there. I found an old Micky Spillane mystery to read. Rooms are very comfortable and the bathrooms appear to be recently refurbished.

We arrived on a Monday and was warmly greeted by the desk staff. Our accommodations were ready for us. Check in was very easy. The Inn is very historic, dating back to 1827. The room was very clean and comfortable. We had the "Bed & Breakfast" package which is an excellent value. The breakfasts were plentiful and very tasty. All the staff were very helpful and knowledgeable of both the Inn and the surrounding area..

Middlebury Inn makes a feature of the elevator that was installed when the Inn was renovated in 1926. Unfortunately the rest of the Inn doesn't look as if it has been renovated since. I know that shabby chic is now fashionable but Middlebury Inn is just shabby.
We had the misfortune to be in the annex, which is really just a collection of motel style rooms adjacent to the car park, but charged at hotel rather than motel prices. The beds were made each day, but coffee cups and coffee maker weren't cleaned at all, and coffee was not replenished in 4 days.
Breakfast was adequate, but service was slow particularly on one of the mornings.
We asked if we could stay in our room an extra 4 hours on leaving and were told "no" in an extremely dismissive way, despite the Inn literature suggesting that this would be acceptable if requested at Front Desk.

Overall, the Inn presented a picture of extreme complacency, after all they can fill their rooms with ease because of where it is, particularly on Fall weekends. So investment in the premises and customer service would merely reduce the profit.

Thank you for posting your comments. We take great pride in the Inn and are very sorry that your experience was not a better one. October is an extremely busy time for us, and we apologize that you were not treated with the utmost courtesy from our staff. We continue to make improvements throughout the Inn, and in fact the Inn underwent a major renovation over the past two years, which required substantial capital investments. This included new carpet and new tile in the bathrooms as well as some new furniture and furnishings throughout the Inn and Annex. We have purchased new mattresses for most of the beds throughout the Inn and Annex and plan to complete the process by the end of next year. We completely redecorated the banquet areas in the Inn and added a day spa in the lower level. We eliminated an unattractive asphalt parking lot and created a beautiful flag-stoned and landscaped Courtyard. We will continue to maintain and improve the Inn as the comfortable and gracious historic property that it is.
I invite this guest, or any other guest, to call me at (802) 388-4961 to share ideas and discuss this further. Jeffrey Costello, General Manager.

Overall, this is a nice spot. Has a wonderful location overlooking the town green and is extremely convenient for walking anywhere. The hotel is a pretty, historic building and is surely a huge upgrade from the Marriott down the street.

All that said, some elements of the space underwhelmed me. The bathroom could have been cleaned a little better and the beds were not very comfortable.

On the whole, a good choice to stay in town at Middlebury.

The location can't be beat--and Middlebury's a really walkable town. The rooms are definitely showing slight wear, at least in the Porter Mansion (the annex, where our rooms were located), but they are comfortable, cozy, and clean. The fitness center (which I did not use) was a mile from the hotel, but there is a restaurant with a decent breakfast buffet on-site, and they serve dinner some (but not all) nights. Middlebury has a lot of dining options, though. Service was adequate, but not outstanding. The afternoon tea was a nice touch (especially the fresh chocolate chip scones!) and there is a day spa at the Inn, although I did not use it.

Stayed 3 nights at the Middlebury Inn. It is a lovely town with a beautiful college campus. Everything closes at 5:30pm though. The stay at the Inn was nice. Since we had a dog we had to stay in the Annex, which isn't as nice as the Inn, but we could use all the facilities. Friendly staff; they loved the dog. Annex is very quiet. Price is reasonable. Look for Ollie, the 2 humped camel on Rt 7.
