A Room in the Village Bed & Breakfast
Ranked #5 of 11 Middlebury B&B and Inns
Reviewed 16 October 2012

Patty and Guntram are excellent hosts in this high quality, very comfortable B&B, which is conveniently located a 10 minute walk from the centre of beautiful Middlebury. They welcomed us into their home and made it feel like our home from home. Breakfast table conversations with our hosts and fellow guests were always a delight as were the varied and healthy breakfasts themselves. The accommodation is excellent, providing light, airy space, a very comfortable bed and a great shower. And everywhere is enhanced by Patty's amazing art which we loved. It is a superb base for exploring northern Vermont. We arrived as strangers and left as friends. K&S, England

We recently stayed at A Room in the Village and had a wonderful experience. The rooms are very comfortable, each with an AC unit that works really well. (We were there in the summer.) The bathroom and shower work well, too. In each room, there is a loft, perfect for reading or writing. Upon our arrival, Patty was so nice to us. She is a pleasure to be around, and a really interesting person. We also met her husband, Guntram, and he was just as friendly. In the morning, Patty cooked us herb omelets, which were delicious. They had fresh herbs and cherry tomatoes from her garden. She also set out fresh local berries with yogurt and granola for us. We didn’t try her lattes, but I hear they are the best in town.

My mom and I were in Middlebury visiting Middlebury College, where Guntram is a professor. They told us that each year they have students over for Thanksgiving, and I was always welcome to join them.

We had a wonderful experience and would recommend this B&B to anyone.

A Room in the Village gets our recommendation. We enjoyed seeing their Native American medicine wheel in the backyard, as well as sitting in the gazebo. There is also a front porch to sit in while catching the passing scene in Middlebury. Breakfast was freshly cooked with local natural ingredients, for the most part. We hope to return again.

We recently spent 3 days in Middlebury and stayed at A Room in the Village. From the warm welcome at the door to the beautiful paintings throughout the house, to the delicious breakfast and very comfortable bed and room, we found this to be the very best B&B experience we have ever had. We felt truly welcome here and enjoyed the intelligent conversation and creativity of our hosts. They were very helpful in guiding us to local restaurants as well as good day hikes and other activities in the area. Our room had books of poetry and novels for our reading enjoyment. Both Patty and Gundrum are very open, welcoming and affirming people; as women travelers, we were relaxed and comfortable in their home. Sandy & Patricia

About A Room in the Village B&B, I've got only great things to say. A lot of tiny details make this place a gem, but it is the people and the love and care they have devoted to their home and to being gracious hosts that make Room in the Village a truly special find. When we arrived, Patty greeted us warmly and escorted us to the upstairs suite. The space was lovely and we appreciated how clean and tasteful everything was.

After unpacking we walked into town and picked up dinner, which we brought back to the house. Our plan was to sit on the porch so as not to disturb Patty and Guntram, but Patty welcomed us into her kitchen, put out plates and cloth napkins and held our 6 month old son so my husband and I could enjoy our meal with both hands.

Later that night after we put our son down in a pack n play, we headed up to read in the loft while he slept. The room is a little small and if you have an older child or baby who needs dark/silence, this set-up might not work for you. The good news is you could easily put a baby monitor in the room and feel safe heading to the porch or the kitchen for some adult time while your little one sleeps.

The next morning Patty served us a delicious breakfast. When she learned I don't eat eggs, she adjusted the meal accordingly. Apparently, she enjoys making meals for people with dietary restrictions, as long as guests let her know ahead of time what their limitations are.

From start to finish, Patty and Guntram made us feel so welcome and cared for. There is nothing flashy about A Room in the Village, which is exactly what we liked about it. And we loved the price!! We were not looking for privacy during our stay, but I imagine if we were, we could have been honest with our hosts and they would have left us entirely to ourselves except at check-in, check-out and breakfast. As it was, at the end of our visit (which was less than 24 hours) we felt rested, relaxed, like we had been pampered and as though we were leaving friends.

PS: Prospective Middlebury College students/families: Patty and Guntram are connected to the college. I walked away from my time on campus and my time at this B&B feeling like I really understood the school. I recommend Room in the Village to ANY family touring MC.

We first stayed with Patty and Guntram last fall when we were visiting our daughter, a student at Middlebury. We returned in June for her graduation, and were so glad to once again have our room in the village. We were able to walk to campus and to town, or take the car--either way, we were never far from our destination. Breakfasts were healthy, delicious, and plentiful. The inn is decorated with Patty's beautiful artwork, and is welcoming and clean. Our room upstairs was air conditioned--helpful on what turned out to be a hot weekend--and had a loft furnished with a reading chair. The last night we were there, our children joined us and stayed in a second room down the hall. Both rooms have comfy beds and plenty of room. We really enjoyed meeting Patty and Guntram--they are ideal hosts, friendly and knowledgeable. They recommended a wonderful restaurant when we were there in the fall--took us til the spring to get there, and the wait was worth it. Our only regret is that we found them so late in our daughter's time at Middlebury--we'll need to find another reason to return.

Room Tip: I don't think there is a bad one.

So happy we discovered this gem in central Middlebury! Stayed 3 nights in April and felt so pampered and comfortable. Patty & Guntram are exceptional hosts and fun to talk to, great sources of info about village and college/campus walks, cafes, etc. The Suite was charming, private and so restful with a clean and comfortable bathroom just steps away. Had a peek at the other room available, tidy and comfy with its private bath also. Breakfasts were delicious and plentiful, in the well decorated dining room. The gardens and views are really lovely. We felt very welcome and enjoyed our privacy too--nice balance! Patty is a painter and creative in many areas; her husband is a geography professor and fun to talk with also. The location, right in town, is great. Easy stroll to the village center and so convenient to campus (less than 10 minutes, for sure). We highly recommend this B&B and hope to return soon.
