Not all would share my 5 star review, but the A&W on Route 7 approaching Middlebury from the direction of Rutland is a trip down memory lane. My first experiences with the A&W go back to the 1950s, when I spent summers on Lake Dunmore. I swear it hasn’t changed. If you are looking for a place to see the way things were way back then before franchised fast food joints became king, this is for you.

I confess; I am a diner/fast food/roadside burger joint junkie. I inherited this vice from my GI, iron-stomach Dad. Egan's Diner, hard by the RR and slightly sooty; Coney Island Hot Dogs (only got sick once); Tower Grill (great before they ordered Greek Diner Pre-made sections A, B2 and K2.5).

So what you're salivating over is readily available just south of Middlebury, VT, on the left going south. NOTE: CLOSED EARLY FALL, REOPENS IN SPRING. Be there or go hungry.

Also Frankie's, "The Hot Dog King". I grew up with foot-long dogs, sautéed lobster rolls and diluted JayMar soft drink syrup. Look for them in CT, especially in the Waterbury, CT area. Francis "Frankie" Caiazzo has passed, as so many of his dogs, burgers, onion rings and butter-sautéed lobster rolls. But their taste lingers on. Google them!

A great memory of the first fast food restaurant to come to the Upper Valley. This is the only one of the chain left in Vermont. Eat in your car with Roller Service or inside (but that's no fun.)

A&W has my favorite root beer! Not sure what happened to the Teen Burger and Mama Burger...

Family fun, once a year treat.

Pretty cool how you can drive up and they serve you in your car. Burger was alright, fries were good and root beer float too.
