Description: Our Story:In the late nineties, a beautiful event planner from Brittany met a young, American chef from New York. Before long they married and their union produced first a daughter and then a culinary revolution in Brooklyn, New York. Locals flocked to Loulou, their first French bistro, as much for chef Bill's lusty cuisine, as Christine's gracious charm. Before long, Loulou beget Cocotte, another French eatery that drew crowds. Other chefs followed them, lining the streets near the Snells' restaurants with all manner of eateries. The couple turned their sights on a life-long dream: to own an inn and restaurant in Vermont. The Snells purchased the well-regarded Roland's Place in New Haven, Vermont in July 2009, changing its name to Tourterelle to reflect its romantic theme as a serene restaurant, inn, and venue for special occasions.

Driving on Route 7 from Middlebury, Vermont, we came upon this beautiful restaurant, in a large country manor, Tourterelle, the name of the french turtle dove, with a wonderful & inviting sign out front by Vermont's renown artist Harry Bliss. I've now been back over a dozen times and I cannot resist ordering the Tartiflette in the winter months when it's on Chef Bill's menu. Something about the raclette cheese that lures me in every time. And it's never exactly the same, with the chef using whatever ingredients are most fresh . . . however there are so many options to choose from. Recently the "tourterelle" salad was transformed with the addition of herbs (dill and cilantro) and sprouted lentils. There's no wrong choice on this menu and I can't recommend Tourterelle highly enough. Also a great party space in back / if I weren't married already I would have my wedding there :-)

I've been here twice now, the most recent time in the beginning of November. The menu had changed a bit since last time I was there – my mother was searching for the goat that was on the menu last time.

Anyway, the food couldn't be better. it's the type of meal you have that after it's over you think to yourself "oh, so that's how you're supposed to eat." The food is really elegant, while avoiding pretention. I love love love that there's so many non-meat choices and also fish choices. Sometimes at upscale restaurants, only 20 dollar pasta is available to those who don't eat red meat.

Only detail to advise to people who havent yet been there: it's a house used as a restaurant. thusly, the dining areas are smallish. In the room we were seated, I think there were only three other tables. & it's not a rowdy place, everyone talks in subdued voices, so you can hear the other diners' conversations if you wanted to. It has the potential to be a little awkward for first dates, or meals out similar to such.
