“A wonderful time!!”
Reviewed 15 February 2014

We stayed for 2 nights during a snowstorm, the breakfasts were great! Tim did a fabulous job keeping one of our breakfasts gluten free! My wife is extremely sensitive to gluten and had no adverse reactions to the food. Deb printed us copies of our passports that were emailed to us, (do not forget your passports!! We had no problem getting into Canada without them, however getting back to the states, we were delayed. But the copied passports did work! Thanks Deb) we had some great skiing at Sutton and Burke, we tried skiing Jay Peak on a Powder Day Saturday, not a good idea, could not find a parking lot that was not full! So we went to Burke, since it was on our way home, and were pleasantly surprised, the next trip we will ski Sutton, Smugglers Notch and Jay, all within a very close drive from this great Bed and Breakfast! Also the dog Heinz was charming!

The Grey Gables is a charming B&B in Richford, VT - in the Northeast Kingdom. The hosts were great, as was the breakfast. The inn itself is simply amazing, worth the drive just to see it. For dinner, we went to the Belfry, the food was fine, the people even more so.

Room Tip: we were in a 2-bed room, everything was really nice.

We stayed here while on a bike tour through Vermont and it was perfect. The hosts were really great, very welcoming and friendly people (and dog) and we felt like part of the family for the day. Richford itself is a somewhat depressed town, but the location is right in the middle of some great outdoor recreation opportunities. Grey Gables is a fantastic place to get a good nights sleep, a fabulous breakfast, and some good company. Rumor has it that Tim may start serving dinner, so we will be trying to invent a reason to head back up there....

The Grey Gables Mansion is a lovely old home that is made all the more fabulous by the wonderfully gracious hosts, Tim and Deb. We mostly interacted with Tim, since Deb was off at her day job. He is genuine and very friendly, a personable man who is the perfect innkeeper. Rooms very comfortable. Breakfast great. Nice big side yard to play frisbee with the kids. Sits across from one of the town parks that is right on the bank of the river. Not a single negative or even neutral thing to say. Everything first rate. Will certainly return.

That's biking & bed & breakfast. Although we live only 50 miles away we were looking to explore the 26 mile long Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail. We parked in St. Albans, VT and biked the 26 miles to Richford and arrived to an architectural wonder. The mansion’s appearance is almost like a design out of Disney, it is so spectacular. When you learn the story of this historic inn you will understand how it was originally built to impress the near population with the gentleman owner’s stature and importance. The “Mansion” is a very ornate and decretive Victorian that has been very carefully painted to expose its striking details. I can’t image anyone not saying, “Oh wow!” upon first viewing it.

Tim put our bicycles safely away in his shed and invited us in. My eyes first took in the amazing depth of detail in the woodwork around the windows and doors. The stairway with its banister is a piece of art all by itself. The living room, dining room and pub with their tall ceilings are spacious and comfortable. The wall colors and drapery provide that impressive yet soothing Victorian B&B feeling that we all wish to experience. Our quite large room overlooked Richford’s park and gazebo with the Missisquoi River beyond. The 5 stained glass windows had the afternoon sun behind them to add a dramatic radiance and warmth to the room. Even the details on the bedspread were cause for inspection. What a delightful space!

Our breakfast was both healthy and gourmet. There was fresh fruit, yogurt, granola, fruit juice, a pot of decaffeinated coffee (our preference that was skillfully and almost unknowingly procured from us), raspberry and white chocolate muffins, and a grand dish of specially prepared walnut pancakes and bacon. Now that’s a breakfast!

Our price for the stay was extremely reasonable given the breakfast and the beauty of the mansion. If you are just a visitor passing through the North Country, or a local Vermonter looking for some special time away I think you’ll find the Grey Gables to be a treasured experience.

Logistically, this is a perfect overnight destination if you want to take two days and bike what even a Vermonter would consider the “picture perfect” Missisquoi Valley. Be sure to print (see website) or obtain a copy of the Missisquoi Valley Rail Trail’s map before you leave so that you can look forward to and appreciate every mile. If you are lucky enough to find it open there is a very nice little museum featuring the railroad’s history in Enosburg Falls by the red caboose. You’ll also find a great rest stop at the town’s park just to the right on Main Street (assuming you’re biking toward Richford).

We were very happy with our stay at the beautiful Grey Gables Mansion on July 12-14. It is a lovely, well-maintained property with impeccable hosts Deb and Tim Green and their excellent dog, Heinz. We arrived in the late afternoon on Saturday and were greeted by Deb when we entered. She showed us our room and Tim arrived home shortly thereafter and helped us get settled in.

Our room was a double with a private bath. The room had air conditioning and a ceiling fan which were very welcome since it was over 90 degrees every day that we were there. There is a beautiful wrap around porch on the front of the house facing the river where we sat each evening relaxing with the wine and cheese that we brought. Tim was the breakfast cook and the meals that he prepared were fresh and tasty. Each breakfast had fresh cut fruit, yogurt, muffins, and then a varied main course including pancakes, omlets and french toast. All nicely prepared, nicely served, and very tasty.

Our trip to Richford was recreational for kayaking and hiking, both of which are plentiful and very close by. We stayed at the Grey Gables three nights to give two full days of recreation.
We were steered to the Grey Gables by the Northern Forest Canoe Trail association. It was a great find. The Missisquoi river flowed through the park directly across the street from the inn. We carried our kayaks across the road and were able to embark on an unimpeded 15 mile trip downstream to Enosburg Falls. We also hiked the Long Trail over Jay Peak one day which is a moderately challenging, but friendly hike. Grey Gables was very reasonably priced which would also make it an excellent alternative to the Jay Peak expensive condos and townhouses for skiers and golfers.

There is very little to Richford, but we were able to travel about 10 miles to Montgomery for some good dinner choices. Tim is heavily involved in some economic development efforts in Richford to try to stimulate commerce and jobs in the town. The countryside immediately around Richford is mostly dairy farms. A little farther east are the Green Mountains and the ski resort of Jay Peak.

Nice place and we would return.

First, let me begin by saying that the individual responsible for the only review that does not give five stars (which was written in 2005) could not be more off base. Without addressing every detail, I can confidently say that review should simply be disregarded.

Anyway, where shall I begin? I have no words to express how truly phenomenal our experience was this past weekend at Grey Gables! After learning Jay Peak had just gotten three feet of snow, my boyfriend and a friend of ours booked a last minute weekend here for a place to stay while not on the mountain from open to close. Tim and Debbie accomodated us in every way possible. They did everything from staying up late to greet us upon our arrival (near midnight), to preparing breakfast especially early so we could catch first tracks, to wrapping our left over dinners so we would have something to eat on our seven hour drive home Sunday night.

They offered local advice for where to eat, popular activities during other seasons and warmly invited us to return any time. Their beautiful dog, Heinz, was incredibly friendly and really contributed to how at home we felt. This was both my boyfriend's and my first bed and breakfast experience (not just together but in our lives) and it certainly set the bar high! I cannot recommend this place enough, for both couples and friends, and we will stay there any time we return for boarding at Jay Peak. Thank you so much Debbie and Tim, we can't wait to come back!

P.S. What everyone says about the breakfasts is beyond true-hands down best morning meals we've ever had.
