“Delicious Food in charming setting”
Reviewed 13 October 2013

We have dined here a few times now and like it more and more each time. We made a 7:30 pm reservation on a Saturday night, but showed up at 7:00 pm and Eugenie was more than happy to accommodate us on a busy night. Love that.

For some reason, both my husband and I were in the mood for a burger, and boy oh boy does the SSB do a burger right. I had mine medium rare and added Vermont cheddar. The other burger was ordered rare with gorgonzola. Both burgers were cooked perfectly and the roasted potatoes that come along with the burgers are also a delightful treat and so different than the ordinary order of french fries.

I started with the mushroom strudel and it was light and delightful. When looking for a special treat in Rochester for dinner with a charming hostess and great chef (Eugenie's husband Brent slaving away in the kitchen), you can't do better than the SSB. Oh, and ask for Karen as a waitress. She is incredibly attentive and knows the menu very well and can steer you in the right direction if you're uncertain what to order.

And finally, the tiramisu. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. Eugenie doesn't just stand around and greet and seat guests -- she's the baker and never have i had such a perfect rendition of this dessert. Go. To. This. Restaurant. 'Nuff said!

“Perhaps the best in the Route 100 Valley! Don't drive by...stop!”
Reviewed 25 September 2013

Memorable, unpretentious, imaginative, well executed and presented... and of course delicious!

The School Street Bistro has it all going here, you will find a wonderfully complete menu that doesn't try to do everything, but everything it does it does very, very well. Want something light or simple.. they offer a fantastic looking burger. Desire something a little more interesting? Then you can choose from an efficient offering of more sophisticated entrees, not overwhelming in the amount of choices but covering a range that is sure to hit target with most palates.

We enjoyed all courses.. appetizer, entree, dessert with a nice (and again... efficient) selection of wines. Seating is limited indoors I think, which adds to the whole experience, but reservations are accepted. Don't drive by thinking that you'll find something equal further up or down the valley... this is a fun and totally rewarding dining experience that's difficult to match anywhere.

“Amazing!!!!!”
Reviewed 19 September 2013

We ate four meals in Rochester. All were surprisingly good but the two at School Street Bistro were AMAZING!!!!! I wish we had a restaurant like it at home. The service was perfect BOTH times and we had two different servers! Both were friendly, helpful, and very fun! The owners went above and beyond to welcome us and make us feel welcome. The drinks were great... Good beer selection and an amazing martini named Summer's End. The meals both evenings were perfect. We had the burger, a vegetarian entree, and both were excellent. The salad made with beets was amazing. We also had dessert both nights...tried all three choices and they were perfect. I loved that a small place in the middle of Vermont had French press coffee. Everyone there seemed to be having a good time and we felt so welcome! It was like there was a party each evening!!! We also loved the artwork...some done by diners and an amazing sunflower painting done by the owners' son. We will be back and would eat there often if we lived nearby. The people in Rochester are lucky to have such a fine, reasonable place to dine. We were on the road two weeks and it was our best restaurant....including those in Montreal and Quebec City!!!

“Just a short ride from Cobble House Inn Bed and Breakfast, one can experience, "Dinner Heaven."”
Reviewed 10 July 2013 via mobile

On Tuesday, July 9th, our family took a short ride to the School Street Bistro in Rochester, VT. Five guests in our party each selected something different from the menu and were completely satisfied. From the Grilled Marinated Shrimp special to a Bistro Burger, you can't go wrong! Try this place when in the area!

“A Surprising Gem!”
Reviewed 6 July 2013

There's not much going on in the Rochester area in terms of quality food... (yes, the bakery has amazing bread and the Rochester Cafe has good breakast/lunch). We stopped in for dinner recently and were really impressed! Eating outside is lovely and the food was of great quality. Lots of flavor, inventive ingredient pairings, and the best part, really good prices! (For two of us with two appetizers, two entrees, two desserts and two beers with tip the bill was $65.) Lots of vegetarian options and ethic-inspired meals (like kebabs, for instance). The cold peanut thai noodle dish was awesome, as was the grilled tempeh. The chocolate cream pie was also phenomenal. Quaint and real.... we really enjoyed it.

If you're in Rochester, this is your spot! They also had Lawson's beer on tap when we visited... an awesome plus. We can't wait to go back when we're in the area.

(One final note, there's no way the average pricing is $30-$40. Most entrees were $10-$16.)
