Johnnycake Flats Inn

We have stayed here twice now, both times in the Fall season. The inn is everything it purports to be. Jim and Debra are charming and gracious hosts who will put themselves out to ensure that the visitor makes the best of their time in Vermont. The bedroom we stayed in was gorgeous, just like being at home really. We felt like part of the family. Debra cooks super breakfasts and the preserves and jams are home made and taste like it, no preservatives here! I would highly recommend this place to anyone. Fall is the best time to visit in our opinion, the autumn colours are a sight for sore eyes, especially as we come from tropical Australia where most of our trees in Queensland are evergreen.

Room Tip: We have only stayed in the main double room, this is very comfortable and quite a charming room, it...

My mum and I stayed with Debra and Jim for 2 nights in July whilst visiting Vermont from Scotland. We were made to feel most welcome and had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay. We would highly recommend this lovely B&B if you want to be off the beaten track and have a nice relaxing few days in the area. We felt very at home here and our delicious breakfasts set us up for the day visiting the area's covered bridges and quilt shops! Our hosts were more than helpful recommending places to visit and eat. A lovely find.

Overview (BLUF for you military types):
Johnnycake Flats provides a unique and personalized experience that made us feel like we have lived there our entire life. The local area knowledge that Debra and Jim have to share allowed us to fully experience and enjoy Vermont’s natural wonders. Their country style house and intimate atmosphere are a cozy retreat from our hectic daily lives. You will be missing an amazing opportunity if you choose to stay anywhere else. My wife and I look forward to our future stays at Johnnycake Flats every time we visit Vermont.

The Good Stuff
While the overview provides a summation of our six day stay with Debra and Jim, it does not come close to fully explaining the sentimental and emotional impact that our stay at Johnnycake Flats had on us. We cannot emphasize enough how warm and welcoming Debra and Jim were. In a sentence: our stay at Johnnycake Flats felt more like visiting an old family friend than renting a room for a week. The proprietors, Debra and Jim, have genuine personalities that reached out to us from the very beginning. They shared their travel stories with us as if we had known them our entire life. We were even introduced to their daughter through pictures and adventurous tales as only a loving parent could share.

What was especially nice about Debra and Jim was their emphasis on the a-typical tourist experience. A travel book, road sign, or hotel concierge will tell you to visit Ben and Jerry’s or go to the Burlington waterfront but they will not provide you with the life experiences that will stay with you forever. Fortunately for us we didn’t stay at a hotel with Jacuzzi bath tubs or read a travel book with corporate sponsors and instead opted for Johnnycake Flats (we did read road signs as they evidently provide some good information, who knew?), learning and growing from the insight only a biology and economics professor could provide.

Our first full day with them started with rhubarb muffins which were not only amazingly delicious but educational as they provided us the opportunity to discover what rhubarb really was and get a lesson in the dos and don’ts of its consumption (this should not concern those who already have a comfortable understanding of rhubarb, Debra will not lecture or test you unless specifically requested). After breakfast we were given myriad travel suggestions including one of the most beautiful drives we have ever experienced; Smugglers Notch up Vermont Highway 108 is something every person should experience in their life and is a place we will be revisiting (by motorcycle next time). Upon our return home we were greeted by a newly emerged, gigantic moth (think dessert plate) that Jim and Debra had previously found. It was amazing to see the moth and learn about the local wildlife (again a brief lesson for us). And that was all in day one…

The following days adventures varied as the reason for our trip was not purely for pleasure and we had to spend some time at Norwich University (about 10-15 minutes north). Every day we learned something new and experienced something we will never forget. Raising chickens, gardening, and paddle boarding are just some of the other unique and interesting activities we were fortunate enough to enjoy. There truly is something for everyone to enjoy. Additionally, don’t get jealous now, but we even saw (almost hugged) a moose! Evidently they can read signs and come when called because my wife asked to see a moose right after passing a moose crossing sign and sure enough a cow came out to say hi. Finally, our last night really emphasized that we made the right decision staying at Johnnycake Flats; all of the guests had a family style marshmallow cook-off in the fire pit next to the barn where we shared stories of our stay and lives back home.

It was difficult continuing our trip and leaving Johnnycake Flats as we had begun to feel like a part of their family and knew that we would be unable to replicate that experience (well, that and Debra made rhubarb compote for our morning waffles). While the rest of the trip was by no means bland, it was that first week that we will look on most fondly. We cannot express enough how wonderful of an experience our stay at Johnnycake Flats was and implore you to venture off the grid to enjoy an adventure with Debra and Jim.

Room Tip: Book early if you want to stay here as there only 3 rooms to choose from. Other than that if you co...

After the floods of 2010, my girlfriend and I stopped there on our way back from Woodstock to Montreal, the day before a day-hike at Camel's hump. Well hidden in a peaceful valley, the Inn has everything you can wish for: a large vegetable garden and a barn, two friendly dogs, a fireplace and a veranda, wood beds and hand-made quilts, welcoming hosts eager to have an easy-going conversation and to give info on the area, delicious breakfast (fresh made waffles and great coffee). The mountain road behind the Inn offers wonderful views on the Green Mountains.

My 10 year old daughter and I arrived at Johnnycake Flats Inn in mid-April 2012 for a weekend getaway stay. We were very pleasantly surprised to find how friendly, warm, and welcoming both the Innkeepers, Debra & Jim, and their two dogs were. The rooms in the Inn were very cozy and comfortable offering a terrific night's sleep! The breakfast was a delicious homemade delight!

We were planning on some last minute spring skiing but we decided to enjoy the spring-like weather around the Inn instead! My daughter really enjoyed the tree swing and giving the dogs and the newly delivered chicks daily attention! The two of us enjoyed hiking in the backyard, visiting the brook/stream across the field and relaxing near the water on the flat rock. We also enjoyed exploring a couple of towns nearby which offered great sights, lakes, great shops, and great food!

This is a cozy, quiet, and peaceful place to getaway. I highly recommend going to JohnnyCake Flats Inn if you want to get away from your every day hectic schedule, you will not be disappointed!

I've twice stayed at this quintessential inn in Roxbury and both times have had my experience exceed my expectations. Deb and Jim are consummate B&B hosts, making guests feel welcome and providing outstanding breakfasts as well as assisting with directions, ideas for activities, and participating in conversation based on the wishes of their guests.

The rooms are pristine; the common rooms are inviting; the gardens are spectacular. The location of the inn is ideal for proximity to Sugarbush plus the beauty and attractions of Routes 12 and 100.

My mother and I were traveling through the New England states and didn't want to miss the mountains in Vermont and to check out a maple sugar farm. I chose Johnnycake Flats through the on-line reviews. It was a beautiful drive though it was still quite cold. We were met first by their dogs Brumby and Lila and then by the owner with hot apple cider, coffe and cookies. The owner was very gracious and interesting, the room was roomy and comfortable though all the rooms were upstairs - we had help carrying our bags up. The was a large living area downstairs with fireplace, books and reading areas. The continental breakfast was generous and the owner's homemade granola was delicious.
