Comfort Inn Trolley Square
Ranked #3 of 12 Hotels in Rutland
Reviewed 9 August 2006

We stayed at this hotel in August of 2006. They have recently finished a renovation, so there are new carpets and furniture throughout.
This is a basic hotel, no frills, but still it is clean and comfortable. The lobby is small and crowded, and people actually vie for parking spots in the parking lot, which is too small and inconvenient. We did not try the restaurant across the street but did try the Sirloin Saloon within walking distance, which was OK (they served my kids' salmon raw-ish inside). McDonald's is right on the corner near the hotel.
The pool is tiny and was cloudy. Yech. The whirlpool is old fashioned and looked slippery. We did not try the sauna.
This towel thing is a valid point. Even though it must have been obvious that we were four people in the room, the maid continuously left only 2 sets of towels, which I found extremely annoying. The bathroom is tiny and the useless fan is attached to the lightswitch, so it came on whenever you used the light. There was a heat light in the ceiling, and the bathtub had one of those old fashioed clotheslines you pull out of a round silver ring, kind of handy if you had clothes pins. The bathtubs were definitely NOT renovated and were scratched and dirty-looking.
The beds were a little high but not too bad; but the bedding had cigarette burn-holes in them. Yech. Our view was of a cinderblock wall into the Army Depot next door.
The location is reasonable, and in VT they roll up the sidewalks so it was actually quiet at night. There is every chain of fast food you can imagine right there on Route 7, and Ponderosa, plus a Hannaford Grocery Store within 1/4 mile. Gas stations and Dunkin Donuts are nearby too. Rutland itself is NOT the ideal picturesque Vermont town. It's a small, ugly city, but the hotel is convenient to Killington skiing, only about 10 min. up the hill. The VT Maple Museum is nearby but don't bother. It was dumb.
The breakfast was pretty good, hard boiled eggs, make-your-own waffles, muffins, donuts, cereal, breads, toaster, yogurt, juices. The breakfast staff was friendly and warm.
Don't expect frills, but a clean night's stay over all.

We stayed at this hotel during Labor Day weekend, during the Vermont State Fair. The hotel itself is situated directly across the street from the Fair. There is also a full service restaurant, located adjacent to the hotel as well as a Ben and Jerry's ice cream shop and bookstore. So, the area itself was very convenient, especially if you are going to the Fair.

Our room was clean and comfortable. Although not the largest room in the world, it was cozy and we managed to sleep well all 3 nights of our stay, even with our 8-month-old child with us. The breakfast was just ok, the standard continental choices with bread, bagels, danish, etc.

As far as recreation, the hotel includes an indoor pool and whirlpool. The pool was very busy the first 2 nights of our stay with several children in and around the pool. We had to ask for more pool towels, and the maintenance man provided those promptly. There is no fitness center onsite, however, I believe the hotel provides privileges to a nearby fitness center.

On one night of our stay, we did eat at the restaurant located on premises. The restaurant has an excellent salad bar and the service was also decent. There is also a Sirloin Saloon located within easy walking distance, which also gets rave reviews.

However, what was most convenient was the location directly across the street from the fair grounds. We were lucky enough to see Jeff Carson in concert on Labor Day evening. He is one of my favorite country singers.

We also ventured into Killington during our trip and enjoyed the many gift shops located on the Killington/Rutland townline. The "Peace on Earth" store was a pleasant surprise, which was very relaxing. The store includes books on the environment and health and also includes a nice assortment of creams, etc. My wife even took advantage of their on-site massage service.

So, if you have plans to visit Rutland, the Comfort Inn is a decent choice in this immediate area. If you are looking for more luxury and don't need to be in downtown Rutland, then some of the hotels in Killington might be a better choice for you.

But, for our purposes, the Comfort Inn was just fine.

Just returned from a weekend trip to Vermont. Stayed 5/6/06 at this hotel.
Received a room on arrival, no reservation. Had a coupon for discount which was honored.

Hotel was very busy with lots of teens who seemed to be participating in some kind of sporting event. There was also a bowling tournament being held.

As a result the hotel was busy, full of children and teens. The pool is indoor with a sauna and hot tub. The pool was full of families and teens. However this was not a problem.

Requested a non smoking room, received same, room was also designated to be handicap accessable. Lovely room, nice bath, but if you are indeed handicap I do not see that this room would be vey convenient.

Restaurant nearby, and Ben n Jerry's within walking distance.
Nice complimentary breakfast in the am. Again very busy, but hotel staff kept up with the food and beverages.

The only negative I could offer, is that the hotel seemed to be out of towels, there were only 2 bath towels in the room, and due to the large #'s of people , pool towels were basically non existant. The hotel staff were nice, and did manage to find me 2 pool towels.

I would definately stay there again.
