Picture a large and stately mansion with a long winding driveway, surrounded by sprawling green meadows, and nestled amongst ancient sugar maple trees, and you have just imagined the Antique Mansion B&B in Rutland, Vermont. This splendid mid-19th century home stands proudly on a beautiful hillside of old pines & hardwoods, adjacent to an equally historic and restored barn, which helps complete the charming scenic quality of this wonderful inn. Located in probably the quietest section of the already peaceful little town of Rutland, Vermont, this B&B is situated near an upscale golf course which further assures your peace & quiet. More on the golf course’s restaurant later! Once inside the front door of this beautifully preserved home, you’re transported to another time and place, as the stately beauty of the massive drawing room draws you in and keeps you there for hours. This room is a destination all its own, straight out of a museum, with high ceilings, deep window alcoves, decorative paneling, colonial lighting, a harpsichord, fireplace, antiques galore, and enough space to hold a costume ball. We enjoyed some of the most restful hours we’d spent in years, just sitting and knitting, or reading a book from the adjacent well stocked library. It truly felt like being in Jefferson’s Monticello on a cool autumn evening.
The lovely grand staircase in the front hall beckons you to wander up to several cozy and spacious rooms, all found just off a massive central 2nd floor hallway. Our suite was in the 2nd floor rear of the house, a cavernous room with enough space to house a family of seven and their servants three. The large bathroom features a Jacuzzi bath-tub, full shower, and an old wooden door just creaky enough to invite the ghosts from out of the swaying trees. Looking out upon the forest of maples and pine trees, we heard nothing but the sweet sounds of nature for two whole days. In fact, this feline friendly B&B virtually guarantees no unwanted 3am barking dog wake up calls. Two adorable and playful outside cats kept us company as we strolled the grounds and the quaint sculpture garden.
The owners are two of the kindest and most attentive inn-keepers we’ve ever met. Their hospitality was warm, sincere, and in just the right measure. Never too much or too little. The breakfast was timed to suit us, not them, and they served delicious meals of eggs, bacon, fruit, and several varieties of juices, tea and coffee. Special requests were delivered expertly and happily. We enjoyed local maple syrup and seasonal locally grown fruits. Coffee, water, or tea was available at all hours in the main floor library, where an extensive collection of books & DVDs was available to borrow during our stay.
The nearby golf course features Baxter’s Restaurant, a two minute walk to a wonderful dining experience. Casual dress and a view of the 18th fairway make this an excellent place to eat after checking into the Antique Mansion B&B. I had the flounder topped with Vermont cheddar cheese, while my wife enjoyed the Broccoli Chicken Alfredo. Both were expertly prepared and simply delicious.
After 30 years, and some one hundred Bed & Breakfast visits, the Antique Mansion B&B in Rutland, Vermont has jumped to within the top three of our most enjoyable places. Very highly recommended.

Room Tip: 2nd floor suite at the rear, over the kitchen. Very peaceful & quiet

Antique Mansion is located in a quiet section of Rutland, Vt, adjacent to the Country Club. It's a beautiful bed and breakfast from app.1870 with many original features- high ceilings, built in china cabinets, marble flooring, and detailedwoodwork. The owner was friendly and very accomodating to our needs. The suite we stayed in was spacious with a queen and double bed and futon couch with a private bath and 2nd bedroom available for a slightly extra fee. It was very comfortable for the 2 of us and would be perfect for 2 couples traveling together. Activities could include golfing at the Country Club next door or downhill skiing app. 30 minutes away. Rutland has Art in the Park and numerous other events throughout the summer and fall season.

Another couple and ourselves were doing a "New England Sampler" tour and were advised by friends to focus on Route 7. We chose the Antique Mansion because it seemed fairly central as we planned day trips from there. The mansion was a gem. Beautifully furnished and comfortable. Rooms/suites can accommodate several people depending on need. The added bonus was getting to know Sally and Larry...by the time we left, it felt like we were life long friends. They had ready recommendations for places to eat and sights to see. We thoroughly enjoyed our trips to Hildene and Shelbourne Farms. Breakfast each morning was a great way to start the day. If we find ourselves back in Vermont, we would definitely return to the Antique Mansion.

We enjoyed two nights in the Antique Mansion B&B, May 10-11, 2014. My wife and I stayed in the Fletcher Suite upstairs and were immediately made to feel at home. Sallie is a first rate low-key hostess and has extensively restored the mansion. (She seems more proud of the barn and it is impressive too!) It is in a quiet secure area. Breakfasts were terrific and we enjoyed visiting with Sallie and Larry. This was a high point of our 16 day road trip. We highly recommend a visit here.

We couldn't have expected anything finer than our one night stay at The Antique Mansion. Our second floor suite was roomy, comfortable and elegant. From the moment we walked through the door until our good-byes we felt very much at home. A short visit with Sallie and Larry and they became quick friends and the perfect hostess and host. We very much enjoyed the Rutland downtown and the scenic countryside. Hope to return one day.

What a pleasant suprise finding this lovely Antique Mansion. The home is beautiful and carries a very interesting history. The interior is warm and cozy filled with many antiques. This is not your old dusty musty antique but one that is sunny, bright and not overdone. Sally and Larry are the most wonderful of hosts making our stay so comfortable and conversation so interesting, we hated to leave. The breakfasts, which are included in the room rate which is very reasonable, are delicious and healthy. Downtown Rutland is just 5 minutes away and Manchester is about 25-30 minutes away. We would highly recommend staying there whenever you are in the area.

Room Tip: The suite with the valted ceiling in the back of the house is great. The views of the sun rising an...
