Owner description: A public library with an art gallery.

This multi-use building is a stunner, inside and out. Includes an art museum, extensive collections for historical research, and frequently hosts public forums. The Athenaeum also makes a practical launch site for a walking tour of many of St. Johnsbury's iconic buildings designed by talented architect Lambert Packard.

The art collection is interesting and the library is beautiful. Another spot that deserves a visit. The docent that explained the collection knew what he was talking about.

This national landmark, which houses an impressive library and extraordinary collection of art, is a must-see when you visit St. Johnsbury. Call ahead of time to schedule a private tour with one of their volunteer docents -- the art collection is quite extensive, and having a docent lead a tour was a huge plus. At the end of my time at the library (which was at least an hour and a half), I purchased an edition of 'Granta' and 'The Paris Review' on the sale book rack -- for a whopping 60 cents! Be sure to visit the website for additional information -- it is well constructed and worth reading.

This is a wonderful gallery to visit at the back of the library where you will find hidden treasures rarely seen in a small town. 'The Domes of the Yosemite' by Albert Bierstadt is centre piece but there are many Hudson River style paintings here. Look around in the library itself too - it's a lovely old building with old fashioned spiral steps. There is a car park at the back of the building.
