The Inn at Shelburne Farms is a marvelous place. We have stayed there multiple days most years over the last decade. This is a historical property. Visitors need to understand that and they need to understand the plumbing is old, much of the furniture is original to the property and there is no HVAC. That is all part of the charm of the Inn and why we love the Inn.
Unfortunately, we have noticed a decline in the last few years of the enthusiasm of the staff in the Inn, not in the associated dining room. I get the distinct feeling that as I heard one young staffer say to another "it is almost over", referencing the season in a tone of relief. The dining room staff is obviously very well managed.
I suspect it is difficult to get seasonal staff that have an appreciation for the history and nature of the property, although a few years ago that feeling was not evident. Perhaps that is just a sign of the times, but isn't it a shame? This great old historical place is rightly in a not for profit organization and offers an opportunity for enjoying the elegance and grandeur of the 19th century wealthy. It would be wonderful if the young staff could appreciate the history and place.
