“What a marvelous place”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 October 2013

The Inn at Shelburne Farms is a marvelous place. We have stayed there multiple days most years over the last decade. This is a historical property. Visitors need to understand that and they need to understand the plumbing is old, much of the furniture is original to the property and there is no HVAC. That is all part of the charm of the Inn and why we love the Inn.

Unfortunately, we have noticed a decline in the last few years of the enthusiasm of the staff in the Inn, not in the associated dining room. I get the distinct feeling that as I heard one young staffer say to another "it is almost over", referencing the season in a tone of relief. The dining room staff is obviously very well managed.

I suspect it is difficult to get seasonal staff that have an appreciation for the history and nature of the property, although a few years ago that feeling was not evident. Perhaps that is just a sign of the times, but isn't it a shame? This great old historical place is rightly in a not for profit organization and offers an opportunity for enjoying the elegance and grandeur of the 19th century wealthy. It would be wonderful if the young staff could appreciate the history and place.

We recently completed our fourth visit to this property. Each visit we notice improvements that enhance our stay. Still no AC or heat, but the breeze from Lake Champlain and the sun from west windows help cool and heat and you can't get a better view. The restaurant keeps getting better. If you want an early 20th Century experience, it is hard to beat The Inn at Shelburne.

Room Tip: Any of the rooms that face the lake.

The location of this inn is wonderful, and each room is different. All rooms, however, are from a different time period, so if you don't want to experience life as it was, it is not for you. It is comfortable, has great views, rooms have good lighting for reading, and good wi-fi. Don't expect to see TV, as there is none! There are lots of outlets, good seating, a huge bathroom (in the room we chose) with old-fashioned fixtures. The room service was so-so, but the room was clean. The service in the dining area was hit and miss, but the food was OK. The grounds are spectacular!

Have you ever wondered how LIFE would be if you were rich ???? Here is your chance .... stay with the Vanderbilts ... or where they used to live. Beautiful mansion right on the shores of Lake Champlain ... sitting in your comfortable Adirondack chair ... looking well ... at the Adirondack mountains across the lake in New York, Beautiful grounds ... great staff The furniture is old ... but hey .... that's the way it WAS 100 hundred years ago. Tea & sandwiches in the afternoon .... coffee in the morning. Awesome location for sure. ~ Ron in California ~

This is the old Vanderbilt "summer cottage", perfectly situated on a grassy knoll overlooking rolling lawns, manicured gardens and Lake Champlain, with layers of silver-grey mountains on the far side of the lake -- so don't think "hotel" and don't think "inn" in the usual American experience. Think , rather, that you have been invited to be a guest of a great family for a long weekend ... not unlike, I imagine, being a guest at an English country estate or an informal French chateau..

The lakeside rooms are almost universally spacious and charming, with outstanding lake views. Twenty years ago, while dropping off our son at a nearby college, we stayed in the Rose Room, which we thought to have been perfect. This time it was Webb room. . not quite to my taste,
but large and comfortable with three windows on the lakeside.(The Webb room had been a man's room, while the Rose room had a distinctly feminine vibe.)

As others have noted, the restaurant, while good, does not measure up to what it should be, and has been, but it is right there on the premises , and it is " good enough" because of that. I would not otherwise recommend it for fine dining , but I have no experience in the area with which to compare it, . The atmosphere of the staff in the restaurant is friendly and casual. For some, this venue is a big date night, or a place to celebrate an event, and people dress up; others are equally in place being well dressed, but less formal.

In a nutshell what you have here is a first- rate property that relies a bit too much on that fact, and fails to pull off the five- star service to which the property is, by all right, entitled--possibly because it doesn't have to, but possibly because that was never what it was about.

Staff are friendly and pleasant, and while some details are well looked after, others are not. Complaints are taken seriously and immediately and pleasantly attended to, but there is a certain level of disorganization, as if no one is making that list and checking it twice.

It just seems a shame, with this property, this location, this history, this potential and these prices, but there you have it. A certain level of luxury raises expectations with respect to service, and when those expectations are not met, it is all the more noticeable.

Should you go? Absolutely. They do "relaxation" and beauty very well indeed.

If you go with the flow you will have a wonderful experience.

The best hotel I experienced in the USA! No airco, no noise. The website tells it all, and I specially like the very calm, relaxed atmosphere. Beautiful walks and if you dare you can swim in the lake. I am from Holland.

What makes this hotel so special is that it is in one of the great shingle-style homes in the United States. It manages to preserve the architectural character of the house and respects the history of the Webb family that built it while being a luxurious hotel at the same time.

The rooms manage to strike that same balance. We stayed in the yellow room, with its charming sunken bathroom and the view out to the old elm marsh. The elms are long gone, but the view is still pleasing.

The most fun part of the hotel is downstairs, with all the wonderful rooms, such as the great hall and the library, the porches, and the recently restored balustrade overlooking a breathtaking view of Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks to the West.

The restaurant is first-class, with a reliance on local produce, including that from Shelburne Farms itself. The service is warm and not intrusive. I loved the leisurely pace of dinner, but without a complaint from us, the hotel offered complimentary dessert and wine to apologize for the delay.

The hotel has young and old guests, and you may find it hard to sleep in, as it is easy to hear the early risers.

Still, we loved this place so much that we want to come back next year, and bring a friend.

Room Tip: The Yellow Room is really a suite with three beds, and so is perfect for three friends.
